The lady who irons everything- what is so bad about that? Is it so bad to take a lot of pride in your housekeeping? Just because it's not your type to do it doesn't make you a bad person either , but it doesn't make her weird or bad just cuz she loves to iron. | No it doesn't make you a bad person. But saying that people who don't iron their hairbows look obviously neglected does kind of give non-ironers the right to poke fun. Only good clean (starched) defensive fun, of course.
lol- u r right. if not ironed = neglectful looking, I would look like the neighborhood bag lady
but I do have a soft spot for the old fashioned housekeeping standards...

I hope you at least keep the rest of your family's clothes ironed and organized.
Obviously, it bothers you or you would not be posting. | The reason I don't fold the underwear is BECAUSE I spend so much time keeping the families clothes clean, ironed and organized. Something has got to give.

Just wondering about the people who don't iron at all. What kind of shirts do your husband's wear? I hate ironing but have a bunch of shabbos dresses, my dh'w shirts my kids SHabbos shirts that cannot be worn without being ironed
Or maybe you send things out to dry clean?.
I defenitly don't iron underwear, though my Hungarian grandmother used to iron underwear and linen.

I am the amother accused of smoking crack and ironing hair bows. (Someone has to explain to me how this is done.)
We all make priorities in life. For instance: I don't make challah; but I am not asking if it OK. If I started a thread on that topic, then I would have my answer just by the question.
I could list my reasons why: I am a bad baker, I take care of my sick mother, I am a busy mother, I am working on parnosa. The bottom line is I know it is better to bake. The answer is apparent by the question.

My husband's shabbat shirts are never put into the drier. They are taken out of the washing machine and hung to dry. If they are a little bit wrinkle he deals, but overall they are fine.
He does not wear all cotton shirts, so that may make the difference.

It's not better to bake, unless you will make the bracha (in my world most people don't have such huge family).
Anyway, chala is linked to religion - ironing is not _________________

My husband sends his shirts to the dry cleaner. He gets them pressed with heavy starch on the collars and cuffs. It is such a nice look for Shabbos. To my eye, the men whose shirts are not pressed just don't look right.
The crotch thing, I also don't know. It makes sense to me when the problem was explained. As far as baby clothes, it is my pleasure. I received gorgeous baby clothes with beautiful details. I love having my kids look as if they are wearing brand new. It just does not look the same after washing without ironing. |
Curious: Do they still look like they're wearing brand new five minutes later? Even when my baby's clothes WERE brand new, they didn't look that way within five minutes. Kids move around, their clothes wrinkle, and then they get stuff on themselves. How many times a day do you have to change them in order to keep the perfectly pressed look??? |
I don't iron my kids clothing but it does make a difference. Like the belt on a little girl dressed. When ironed you get a beautiful bow, and it stays nicer and flat. If its not ironed, its crumbly, and doesn't lie as nicely. It is a nicer look, you just have to care enough to do it. My friend irons her toddlers t-shirts every morning. You can tell even at the end of the day (she also keeps them very clean)

| The way to never have to iron is to buy your husband no- iron shirts ONLY. Such as Brooks Brothers. they dry like a dream. it is fully worth the expense.

If I iron a baby dress and press the ruffles so they look fresh, they still look better at the end of the day then ruffles on a non-ironed dress. I personally love the details on baby clothes. Why bother spending the money if they are not kept nice?

Just answering OP's original ?, haven't read the rest of the thread, which may have long since gone off on a tangent:
Folding laundry is neither a mitzvah deoraita nor a sign of moral superiority. If your storage space is big enough to accommodate clothing laid flat , lucky you! Folding was invented to make large, flat items easier to handle and to allow such items to fit into small storage spaces.
If folding neither conserves space nor makes it easier to keep stored items neat, it's a waste of time and energy.

I don't iron - but dh does. He irons his Shabbat shirts, and actually all his shirts for work are buttoned shirts that need ironing.
I do have a few items that need ironing, but I try to avoid wearing them often for this very reason.

My dh, being thank G-d a competent adult, is responsible for his own shirts. If he wishes to, he irons his shirts; if he's ok with the rumpled look, that's his biz. There will be people who will say or think "how can his wife let him go out like that?" and look at me with disdain instead of placing the blame where it belongs. So be it; he's not six years old, and I'm neither his mom nor his maid.
I am not ok with the rumpled look for myself and therefore iron those of my garments that require it. Synthetics seldom do and so ironically I iron more often in summer, when I prefer cottons.
In childrenswear I would not compromise on cleanliness but if someone will reject my kid as a shidduch prospect because s/he wore rumpled shirts in preschool or in JHS, well, that's not someone I want as my mechtaniste anyway. I steered clear of fussy little girls' dresses full of features like ruffles and pleats that make ironing hell and that look dreadful if not ironed.
It's hard to imagine why anyone would iron underwear or bedsheets unless they were going to either photograph them for a catalog or sterilize them prior to use as bandages in an emergency.

Lucky, lucky you! How big is this drawer, anyway? Although, honestly, even if I had a towel drawer I'd fold bath towels because they're awkward to handle otherwise.

I mean this in the nicest way but before I read this thread I never heard of NOT folding underwear or clothing. It's neither bad or good just a different way of looking at things I guess. I love having neat drawers and closets and probably has a lot to do with growing up with a neat freak mother. My dh sends all his shirts to the cleaners, and my kids dressy clothing gets ironed. Yes I admit by my cleaning lady (she irons once a week so its not like it keeps her busy for hours) but I appreciate when they look crisp and neat on Shabbos. To me clothing is no different than anything else that needs to get organized like linens, towels, toys etc. However I DO NOT think that not folding is anything to be embarrassed about!

Boxers are more comfortable ironed so I have been told.

But seriously, ladies...
we all set our own priorities, based upon our values and the resources we have. Those who value efficiency above fashion and/or have limited time will opt for simple, low-maintenance clothing that looks decent with minimal care. Those who value fashion or elegance above all will opt for clothing with style details that require extra upkeep.
So long as we are meeting our families' basic needs and are not martyring ourselves or anyone else in order to comply with unrealistic standards, it's all good.
hashem yaazor, neat drawers (the storage kind)are not silly. They're efficient.
Neat drawers (the underwear kind), if the neatness involves pressing a hot metal appliance to the surface of the fabric--that's silly. I stand by this statement , even if pelted with a bushel of past-their-prime tomatoes by a horde of irate underwear-ironing balabostes. Ironing underwear is like polishing the soles of your shoes: Not evil, merely pointless.

Is it pointless to iron boxers if the males claim it bunches and irritates them? They like to start the day in undies that are already not crinkled.

What?! Y'all are not using special templates to fold things into perfect squares?
www.flipfold.com
From what I gather on the world-wide wastebasket, life is pretty much not worth living without at least a few of these gizmos. And there seem to be plenty of resources for people who want to use these boards to fold their pants, etc.
I do sort of fold DH's underwear, but I'm not very precise or careful. My kids do their own laundry, and as long as it's in a drawer, I consider it a success!
Of all household tasks, I enjoy ironing more than anything. But most clothes today are at one extreme or the other: everyday clothes are knit and don't require ironing, and more formal clothes require dry cleaning. So my iron is mostly a sewing tool.

Re boxer ironing -
I recently replaced all of DH's woven boxers with wonderful Hanes knit boxers - loose like regular boxers but way softer and much more comfortable. Those DEF don't need ironing. Thank you Target.
