Some of my atypical crockpot successes include applesauce, steel-cut oats, and caramelized onions. The onions are the best - I just cram my slow cooker full of thinly-sliced onions (as much as it will hold!), plunk the lid on, set it to High and head off to work. When I come home, I am greeted by a slow cooker full of yummy browned onions in the most delicious liquid. I strain the onions, and use the liquid for the base of a French onion soup.

Here's how to go from zero to soup Nirvana in 1/2 an hour: Place about 1/2 of the onions and all the broth from the above recipe into a pot, add some vegetable stock, a dash of white wine if you have an open bottle, salt and pepper and simmer for 15 minutes. Then ladle it it into an oven-proof bowl, top with slices of stale bread and enough grated cheese as your conscience will permit and broil till golden-brown. If you don't have an oven-proof bowl, you can simmer the soup while you broil the pieces of cheese-topped bread separately. Serve with a green salad and fruit for dessert. This is one of my most-requested dishes, and it totally justifies the purchase of a slow cooker.

That sounds sooo yummy. I love onion soup. I'm going to try that just as soon as I can get to the store and buy some onions.

We also have a milchik crockpot (small sized one) and if you have one, you can make very yummy macaroni and cheese in it.... put a lotta milk and some grated cheese and some spices in the crockpot and then dump raw macaroni inside and cook. It comes out mushy-ish, but very creamy and delicious.

Thank you everyone for all of your replies. I think Ill stick to how I cook. I dont want to buy something, even for 150 shekels to then possibly not have taste and then have it just sit. That would be very uncool.

I disagree! I rarely use mine for beef, use it for chicken all the time. Whole roast chicken, pineapple chicken chicken & veggies, love it for the meal in one. I also use it for chicken soup, any and all types of veggie or meat soups, blended soups, beans, etc. I even have one for Pesach I use it so much Very Happy

I make some awesome chicken recipes in the crock. You can't leave chicken in as long as you can with meat, but if you time it right you shouldn't have any taste issues. We are pretty picky, and we defintely enjoy chicken recipes.

ugh. maybe its because I didnt grow up with one, but I hated it when I used it when I first got married. I found that everything tasted "dead, lifeless" if you can get what im saying. convenience wise, were someone to work and be out a full day - it amazing. but I cant get past the tastes of the food.

Try this chicken.

I guarentee that if you follow the directions you will end up with succulent tasty chicken (nowhere near dead tasting - and I'm fussy with my chicken).

Once you figure out what methods of crockpot cooking work for which dishes, you'll fall in love with your crock.

Herb Roasted Chicken
• 6 cups water
• 1/2 cup kosher salt
• 1/2 tsp coarse black pepper
• 1 tsp dried rosemary
• 1 tsp dried thyme
• 1 tsp dried oregano
• 1 (3 lb.) chicken, rinsed
• 1 1/4 lbs. whole baby red potatoes
• 2 Tbsp olive oil
• parsley flakes

Add water, salt, pepper, rosemary, thyme, and oregano in a large Ziploc bag. Zip closed and shake to combine. Add whole chicken. Zip closed and place the bag in a large bowl and refrigerate for 12 to 24 hours.
When ready to cook, arrange the whole baby red potatoes in an even layer on the bottom of the crockpot.
Remove the chicken from the bag over the sink. Place the chicken on top of the potatoes in the crockpot. Discard the marinating liquid. Rub chicken with olive oil. Sprinkle well with parsley flakes.
Cover crock and cook on LOW for 6-7 hours. No longer. When done, let the chicken rest in the covered slow cooker for 10 minutes. Serve immediately.

shabbatiscoming, make sure to get an appropriate sized crockpot. I love the 4 quart oval crock. You can lay things out (wide bottom), but keeps food snug (which retains the flavor) for 4 people.
If you buy one that's too big, lots of flavor will be lost in the cooking process.

I love my crockpots. I got one for 15 euro and enoyed using it so much, that I went back to the store and bought one for pessach too. these 15 euros were definitly worth the investment!!! I save so much time. it makes by far the best gulash, hearty soups, meatballs in toamto sauce, brisket and chulnt. I know there are tons of other recipes, but I never tried them. especially in winter the crockpot makes nice hot filling dinners.

I hope that today's crockpots are made better. In Ye Olde Days, everything sort of melted in there.

Yes. But! The very easy cure for this problem is: always put into the crock pot a large jar of tomato, or pasta sauce. I like Barilla brand; it has a hechsher. Others are fine too. In a pinch, mere ketchup with a teaspoon of the powdered spice called Cumin will do. Ketchup without the Cumin will not be that great, however. Don't be scared of the Cumin.

The best crock pots turn themselves down after four hours on High. They are called Smart Pots and come from Rival. There are other great brands too obviously. It is very useful if they have that feature. I would not favor one that you simply set on High and it stayed that way forever.

CHEAP HOME MADE CHUMAS IN THE CROCK POT: I put dried chick peas - rinsed, and previously soaked for only one hour - into the crock pot. They cook overnight on High. You can put a little white vinegar in the water to kill germs if you want. (You won't taste the vinegar.)

The next morning, disconnect the pot first thing. The cooled chick peas are ground into chumas in your food processor, along with: bottled lemon juice, olive oil (NOT another oil), and powdered garlic. Only those things. Olive pieces are nice in it, if you have a can of them. Tahini is great in it, but I don't usually have any. Just pulse it a cautiously, until it is smooth, but not over-pureed. You are not making baby food. Taste as you go, and adjust the ingredients.

This saves money and is easy. The chumas goes into several plastic boxes in the fridge. I haven't frozen it.
One plastic bag of dried chick peas will yield a lot of chumas this way. Goya and Jack Rabbit brands have hechshers.

So, two gadgets, the crock pot and the food processor, take all the pain out of a fussy food, chumas.

Of course fresh squeezed lemon juice is better than bottled, but bottled will do fine. Of course, fresh minced garlic is better than garlic powder, but powdered will do fine. You don't have to measure, just adjust to your taste. Dust with a little paprika when serving.

I use mine every week for the cholent. On pesach-chol hamoed I would prepare supper in it before going out and when we came home we had a ready meal. Somehow, during the year I prefer pot or oven over the crock pot.

I love a crock pot. I even have a Pesach one . We can go out in the day and have a meal ready at the end of the day. On Yom tov I put water in the crock pot and place bags of rice , meat and other things in it . They heat up and never dry out . I work full time and make at least 2x a week something in it. I cook meat and kidney beans in it Thursday night, so Friday I have it soft and ready to add to a soup, which needs almost no cooking time, so shabbos we have a hearty beef soup with soft meat. I find a crock pot a great investment! Smile

I make Italian sauce in the crockpot with meatballs. I also use my crockpot for chilli and things like Italian market soup. These do not taste mushy. The meat gets infused with flavor; but there are other distinct flavors that also develop after the initial bite.

I also don't like mushy meals with everything a blah flavor. The trick for me is to brown my meat first.

I really am thinking of investing in one because I work from 12-530 so it would be so easy to throw everything in at 11 and come home at 6 to supper ready made !

Thing is Im not sure if I have enough ideas what to make besides for .... um.....chicken, veggies and more veggies and more chicken. Like I can't have chicken and potatoes 2nights a week every week I need variety!

They're not expensive, but make sure you do your research before buying one. Make sure it's a good one.

ra_mom can I please have the recipe for the split pea soup and the shredded beef?

These two recipes come out good and flavorful in the crockpot

Stuffed Cabbage
http://crockpot365.blogspot.com/2008/06/cabbage-rolls-crockpot-recipe.html

Chicken Curry
4 chicken bottoms, legs and thighs separated (Works with turkey drumsticks as well)
2 Idaho potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes
10 baby carrots, sliced, or 2 carrots, peeled and sliced
1 large onion, halved and sliced
3 Tbsp olive oil
2 tsp curry powder
2 tsp ground cumin
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 tsp fresh minced ginger
2 tsp kosher salt (or 1/2 if using regular salt)
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/2 cup water

Place 1/2 cup water on bottom of crockpot.
In a large mixing bowl, toss chicken, potatoes, baby carrots and onions, with olive oil, curry powder, cumin, garlic, ginger, salt and pepper. Pour everything besides chicken into crockpot. Place chicken on top.
Cover and cook on low for 8 hours, or on high for 4 hours.
