I really enjoy making famcy cookies and was thinking if I should start selling. I had a few questions for someone who does, aprox how many hours a week are you busy with it? If you enjoyed it when you started did you get sick of it? Does it get stressful? And does it bring in a decent amount of money? TIA Very Happy

do you have access to a shul kitchen, or a separate commercial kitchen in your basement? I don't want you to get in huge trouble unless you live in a state with cottage business rules where you are allowed to bake in your home kitchen.

Anyone is allowed to bake/cook for others for free but to get paid you'll need to be a business, following a few rules, and in most states not be using your home kitchen.

We do have someone here in Cleveland who does it. She started in the bagel store kitchen and then she moved to a house where she could have a separate kitchen so now I think she does it at home. She does cakes too. Really fancy.

You can market yourself for brissim, upsherins, chassunahs, etc.

Seems like a fun business.

I haven't thought of that, but there are so many ladies who do it in their own kitchens.

I think in some states it's legal if you're a cottage business and putting stickers on each product with certain info on it, etc.... I realy don't know the rules since this isn't my baileywick. Maybe in some states it's even ok to bake for profit directly from your home kitchen without the cottage biz stuff--- I really don't know. But before you register and invest in supplies I would check into all that first.

Just because other people do it doesn't make it legal...... we have a bunch of backyard daycamps here--- I have no idea which of them are actually legal---- if they get caught it could be serious business.

we live in israel, but my MIL does it. She specializes in Moroccan cookies for hennas and weddings and such.

I know that she loves doing it, but she gets tired often, especially when there are a lot of orders in a week. She can be up for nights finishing orders. She only does it for extra income (she has another part time job), but she pulls in decent money, and could pull in a good salary if it was her only job, but she will not give up her pension so close to retirement.

she also does it mostly by word of mouth, so there is no advertising or anything. she cooks in her own kitchen, but since its mostly by word of mouth, there has not been an issue with kashrut or the legality of it. If she went full time she would turn it into a full buisness- taxes, etc, and she doesnt want the pressure of that

not to be a negative nelly, but if there is a profit intent and she's not just giving the goods away, she DOES need to go legal and pay taxes. Whether she advertises or not, whether she plans to get caught or not.
