I made my regular cholent recipe and put in meatballs instead of meat. \it came out really good. You may need to bake or fry them a bit first so they don't fall apart.

I like to make ra_mom's brown rice stew with meatballs instead of meat. It comes out delicious!

sticky brown rice stew

-1 cup short grain brown rice (must be short grain, otherwise rice will "bust")
-1/2 onion, chopped
-2 garlic cloves, crushed
-2 tsp salt
-1 tsp teriyaki sauce
-1 piece meat
-4-1/4 cups water (use only 3 cups water if placing stew in a crockpot liner bag)

Place all ingredients in crockpot, with meat on top.
Cover and cook on LOW for a little less than 24 hours.

I make my regular meatball recipe:
1 lb. chopped meat
1/4 cup flavored bread crumbs
1 egg
1 tsp. onion powder

Thanks so much! I made something like this and it came out delish! I doubled the meatball recipe and used barley instead of rice at the last minute and it's almost all gone. My kids ate so much more than they normally do.

I tried meatball cholent because I couldn't get my kids to eat cholent. I got an idea from a sefardi friend who doesn't add any grains to the cholent, so it is a thin spiced broth. This works well, because I can take out potatoes, boiled eggs, chick peas, chicken and meatballs from the cholent and the kids can eat whatever they like, and I can re-use whatever is left in other dishes (I.e. mash the potatoes with oil motzoi shabbos, make fleishig egg salad sandwiches--not that any eggs are left...give them the meatballs separately.)

This was the perfect cholent solution for picky eaters! To think how many years I agonized over leftover cholent! I just stopped adding grains that would thicken it into a stew and served the parts separately!

oh, and to keep meatballs soft...add plenty of egg to the mixture and caffeine in the cholent...a tbsp of instant coffee, is a great meat tenderizer. I use it on pot roast.

You use both meatballs and meat? What kind of meat?

My stew is thick and sticky. We love it this way.
mha3484, I wonder if the thermostat on your slow cooker is set much lower than others.

I was just thinking that if you doubled the recipe your probably didn't need to totally double the water and salt as well.

I have the same crockpot. So it must be the double quantity.
