Has anyone made a decision to specialize their career?
How did it work out for you?
What are the pluses/minuses?
Did you consider yourself more marketable (due to specialized knowledge) or less (as if you leave your current job there are less firms that would be hiring for that specialized knowledge).
Any insight would be highly appreciated .

Yes, although I am not in your field.
It made me more marketable in my area of specialty, and less so in other areas
It was a good move for me personally, because I have a passion for my area of specialty, and this makes work more enjoyable for me. I am also better at my job because I feel more connected to and invested in it. And of course it affords me better job opportunities because of my specialized experience.
I would not specialize in a niche before gaining some broad experience that is more generalized in my field. I also would seriously investigate local and national opportunities in that speciality to ensure demand and job availability.

Thanks.
Yes, the marketability is what I am worried about. On the other hand, parnassah is in Hashem's hand so should I really be worried about so many "what if's?" To clarify, it's not that I am going back to school and then looking for a job; rather, the firm I am currently working for has offered me a certain opportunity in a different department.
So interesting what you said about gaining the broad experience - I worked in this specialized area (Medicaid reimbursement) when I started at my firm straight out of college, did that for about 4 years, and then specifically switched into the tax department because (even though I loved the work and the team I was working with) I felt it was too early in my career to get too specialized. Now I have nearly 7 years experience in tax and I feel like "check" - been there done that.
I am not sure how to assess local or national opportunities (on the off chance that anyone can provide guidance in this specific area - the CMS 2552 (Medicare) cost report, Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement, etc. please let me know). Weirdly enough, I totally by chance met someone within the past couple of weeks - our husbands are friends and we are just getting to know each other - and learned that she is an accountant and works on the hospital side in assisting the health care providers in preparing cost reports (I would work on the State side in providing assurance services). So maybe it's not as narrow as I thought?
A major plus for me would be no tax season and no working for difficult partners (the partners in the health care department are teddy bears!). They also agreed that I wouldn't have to do out of town travel and that I could keep my current flexible arrangement. I am just really really torn though about limiting my job prospects down the road...

| I chose to specialize because after completing my general training, the job prospects in my area of specialty really appealed to me, but there always is that worry of what if this job doesn't work out, have I narrowed my marketability for the future? In my case, I hope I will be okay since together with my specialty, I have these years of manangement and administrative experience that go along with my specialized position, which are always applicable to any higher level job within my broader field, if I am forced down the line to apply for something general. In addition, my specialty makes me more marketable in the education sector, so my worst-case scenario would be to go into academia. Would either of these "plans" help you in your decision?

| The healthcare accountants I know were basically put into that department as entry-level hires. One of the upsides to healthcare accounting is that it is not too hard to find a "quality of life" position in "private." The flipside of that though is that pay may be lower than accounting jobs in other industries.
