My father always joked he'd sneak into one of my school plays in a burka... (if we'd been living in Beit Shemesh, it might have worked...)

The most terrifying interaction happened on the way in. A very old rabbi with long gray hair reached out his hand and started pumping my arm up and down. “What brings you here?” he asked.

I had not prepared a backstory at all. Maybe I could be a tourist, who spoke another language that no one would know?

I decided to be an NYU student instead. A large part of the movement against the Internet is due to the prevalence of pornography there; the Jewish site guardyoureyes.com is almost entirely dedicated to inventing new euphemisms for nudity and relations: “the dark side of the Internet,” “inappropriate material,” “full blown addiction.”

I put on my best “guilty porn addict” face. “Personal interest,” I answered.

I am not stopping my use of the internet, and I disagree with the aim of the asifa, but I think this woman going is extremely disrespectful. There is no reason why this paper couldn't have sent a male reporter, except to be incendiary.

You know, it's inevitable something like this was going to happen. I'm not so bent out of shape. I'm impressed that she was open to hear some of the really good points, like Rabbi Wachsman and the kids these days. I remember hearing Michael Medved speak at a lunch and learn a good ten years ago saying that his mother, ob'm, a preschool teacher saw a major difference in the kids over the years. He mentioned how an image used to appear on the TV screen for 7 seconds, now (I.e. then, 10 years ago) for just 3. (Which explains why I have such trouble watching TV when I'm visiting relatives, can't handle some of the rapid changes.)

Wish I could send her a link to the Mishpacha article I've been raving about Wink

I was watching the Twitter feed for the asifa last night (I have it for work - no, I'm not kidding), and her tweets were actually quite tame.

Quote:
There wasn’t much I could quibble with in the speech. The Internet is about instant gratification? It’s “fleeting and empty”? It causes us to waste productive hours? It threatens the preservation of isolated communities with strong traditions, such as the ultra-Orthodox Jews? Well, yes, but…

I'm not condoning what she did, but it was interesting to see relatively objective tweets (say what you will about the asifa, the rest of them were truly obnoxious).

Oy Oy Oy. I'm so thankful to be a frum Jew...

I sincerely hope she didn't know that it was an 'aveyra' for men to touch women, because she did encourage that to happen, and whether or not she agrees with our teachings, it's disrespectful. They could so EASILY have sent a man.

It might be funny but with all that "security" she still got in! It is so rude and disrespectful to anothers beliefs what she did I am shocked!

And by the way, I don't understand because dh said most of the speeches were in English only 3 were in yiddish and there was no "translation" in citi field either so what was the big thing in the other stadium that they didn't have translation?

Just put this comment on the website:

Funny how people who claim to be openminded and accepting, actually have the narrowest minds around. Would you be so smugly smiling and showing off, if you had fooled someone who held onto some more liberal principles?

What if you had gotten a die hard vegetarian to eat meat disguised as tofu, or a tree hugger to wear shoes made out of leather and wood by telling him it was all synthetic? Also a funny joke?

Or is it just because your so called open minded views only work in one direction that it is all so funny?
I know it will not make a dent, or change the way anyone thinks, but I have very little tolerance for people who claim to be open minded, but only when it works the way they see things!

That's funny, so did mine! He said he would wear a tichel and scarf.
I gotta tell him he wasn't so original.

I disagree with those who were bothered by her being the one to go in. I love to hear a women's perspective. She didn't hurt anyone. It's not like she lied and went into a steam bath and looked at them naked. She went to a public rally that was broadcast. I'm glad she did this.
