Reading comprehension question:
Is this lecture mandatory for Jewish men, and it takes place in NYC, or is it mandatory for all Jewish men who are already in NYC?
I want to know if DH needs to get on the next plane to NY. Mandatory, is mandatory.

For me this whole gathering is a joke, but I know someone here will think me mean spirited for saying that.
Why does one need a gathering to get such an idea across? I think its all just a bit over the top.

And chanchy, Im with you, Ill tell my husband, brother and brother in law to get the next available tickets so that they can be there for the end of it.

Sorry, its apparently sold out. I guess your husband will have to burn in h3ll for all eternity. But fear not. My DH will be with him, so he'll have some great company.

Well the men in my family are not attending and we live in the NY area! If the money spent on citi field and the ten dollars for each ticket was spent on education or on helping fight poverty in the frum community we would all be better off. These leaders could have just given their message in newspaper articles and could have cheaply made CDs to "speak" to the oilam.

It seems unfair that you'd have to PAY to enter a MANDATORY lecture.

Why are you making fun of the tens (if not hundreds) of rabbonim who said people should attend?

You call that making fun of the rabbonim? And that's the best you can say in defense of this huge brainwashing event?

Is everyone supposed to bring their modems with them for a bonfire afterwards? Reminds me of when we all had to burn our 'made in india' sheitels - such a zchus to burn thousands of dollars worth of wigs 'al kiddish H'!

BTW, is imamother on the kosher internet? I guess not, because the women's faces in the ads aren't blurry.

I find it more embarrassing than absurd. I'm glad I don't live in the US right now. I'd be ashamed to show my face in public. It is not possible to be more out of touch than this.

Nobody is making fun of Rabbanim... it's just kind of odd that women are invited to the Siyum HaShas and not the aseifa which probably affects kids and home life far more on a day to day basis and the mothers are home more. It is just showing how out of touch the super right is getting... would they ever offer video hook ups to men??? No, it's degrading and disgusting behavior. But to women... fine.

The right wing is sending women out to work to support families and turning them into the breadwinners instead of the men to enable men to learn... as if all are learning. They are making women speak in board rooms and fight for promotions and then are telling them in the religious arena to take a back seat. It isn't going to work and in a few years... maybe not my generation or my daughter's but certainly by my granddaughter's the 'aseifa" will not be about internet but about the mass amounts of girls leaving right wing yiddishkeit.

The internet should have been dealt with ten years ago, instead of just telling everyone it is assur and don't get it. This is too late. Ten years ago we should have been having aseifas to tell us how to handle this threat smartly. By now we all know the dangers and many of us do already have filters. CD's and ads about the dangers would have gotten the message across as well as a listing of approved filters. This event is reactive instead of proactive. It will be the same with regard to treatment of women, which the yeshivish oilam brought upon itself.

And yes, as every single yeshiva is experiencing budget deficits, and so many need money for basics, this 2 million dollar price tag is absurd.

By the way, my kids are all in right wing yeshivish schools and bais yaakovs so I am not bashing a world I don't live in.

Considering these tickets were selling on ebay (and you don't know who you're selling to in an ebay auction), I wonder about the security of today. Hope and pray all who attend will be safe.

(This doesn't take away from the fact that I'm pro-internet b/c of online college classes, scholarly journals online, Imamother, etc.)

To be fair, they have no intention of banning internet use. R Eliyashiv shlita said they can't put a ban on something so necessary.

They plan to discuss the dangers of improper use, for those who were born yesterday apparently.

You are correct and by the end of the night we will know exactly what was said.

But is just more enjoyable to make fun, sad but true.

I have my opinion but if you think I am going to open my mouth when there are much greater people then me, I certainly won't.

For the record my DH is not going but he does want to listen to the speeches. My DS will be there most likely and I will ask him all about it. My brother is not going as he says someone has to be in Bais Medrash learning and it will be him (he is always learning so this is not a surprise for us).

my theory about the women not being invited is that this is the brainchild of the chassidishe world and therefore women were excluded. that is why the siyum hashas allows woman. I got a cd from the rosh yeshiva of chaim berlin encouraging ppl to go to the asifa. I respect him a lot as he was the m'sader k'dushin at our wedding and my dh's rebbi. however, I thought it was interesting that he said very clearly that he was approached by two ppl to make this cd. so all those rabbanim who signed on- they are endorsing it not because it's there battle cry- it's just that they were asked to do so and they are not opposed to it. my dh did try to get a ticket but they were all sold out apparently. my sister sent in money to the schools only for it to be returned. apparently the organization promised a block of tickets to schools and didn't follow through...

Chassidishe? Most chassidish people I know are saying there's no reason for them to attend since the event is geared for the litvishe/yeshivishe crowd. Had chassidim coordinated this event, there would be absolutely no English speakers featured.

really? because the original rabbanim names on the piece of paper were mostly chassidish!

Interesting in the yeshiva word we are hearing just the opposite.

I guess we are playing telephone.

Tonight we will have the answer.
