I currently work full time and have 2 small kids, but really want to learn graphic design (I hate my current job and have always been interested in graphics but got married young and did not get a degree). I can't quit or find another part time job as we really need the money from my job now.
Does anyone know of any courses online that are good and can be done for someone with very little free time???

I heard of a few online schools for graphics. you want to make sure you are getting a good education, because I feel its really important in the field.
I don't know much about the programs, but the bold edge offers graphic design and so does naahleh.com (it's part of the new college program I think).
I'd be happy to help with any more questions..I'm in the field and really love it.

I don't know anything about any of the shorter courses offered, such as The Bolde Edge, however, like any profession, graphic design takes time and practice and in my opinion, classes are only a stepping stone. You need to learn the tools, but to learn design and to improve takes more than just a few months in a course, and the more you learn and practice the better.
I went to the Touro design program and I found it pretty well-rounded but also limited -- in order to be a successful designer, you NEED an edge, and you NEED to learn and do beyond just what you learn and put in effort to stay ahead of the game.
That being said, I'd recommend googling some tutorials for Graphic Design 101 or Basic Photoshop Skills to see if it's a good fit for you -- and then move on to researching schools and classes. There is a lot of free information on the internet about design that you can learn on your own so you don't have to worry about your schedule just yet, but bear in mind that it's a career that you can't "shortcut"; a shorter course or less class time just means you will be that many hours less experienced.
If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me.

crl I thought you mentioned in another thread that you picked up your graphic design skills through tutorials online and the such? You did not mention that you went to Touro.
Personally, I think that there are some people who have an innate creative sense and for them going for a shorter timed course (which often means you are leaving out the fluff and core college courses which do not pertain to design and getting the knowledge in a shorter time period) is really perfect because they can plug in the 2 together. In general in order to really succeed in the field you need to have an innate creativity and sense for design that is something that cannot be taught no matter if you even get a phd!
Of course as you mentioned crl, there is always lots to know and I think going with a program with which you have contact with instructors out of class time and also continuing your education through design tutorials online resources etc. is a great way to go time wise, economically and convenience

I hear you and I agree; as I said, I honestly have never taken a shorter course. You can for sure learn everything that is taught in Touro in a much shorter amount of time, I was just stating that I attended as a basis for comparison, since I can't offer any info about shorter courses. The reason I don't necessarily think of Touro off the bat as my design education is because it wasn't; it was only a means for my degree, while I personally learned most of what I know from being self-taught, freelance jobs and internships. I just wanted to emphasize that regardless of where you get basic training, you have to supplement, otherwise you slip and that it's important to stay current and the more practical hands on training you get, the better. Maybe smaller courses are an advantage in the sense you can foster real relationships with the instructors, while professors can be hit or miss. Also, there are always short term courses at many colleges that you can take to just learn something interesting that isn't a "core" in most graphic design training.
I think that whatever courses work for you (and I did not mean to knock any shorter courses at all!) are fine, but they can't be the ONLY training or practice that you receive but can be a good starting point. After that, creativity and design sense will be what drives the success of the designer and not where they received training.

It's really a pleasure.
Have you managed to make any progress?
I'll tell you the truth though: I am now doing a course (I live in Eretz Yisroel) in Jerusalem through a college called Compuskills. As much as I got tons of info from online courses, there's nothing like a real teacher, and real homework which challenges you to build your skills.

This is their website:
www.compuskills.org
I go to classes in Yerushalayim, but they have online videos too if you don't want/can't come in for the classes. It's a very heimish all-women school with lots of personal attention.
I really recommend them highly!!!
By the way, I see that there is an American phone number too on their website.
