I teach and will be returning to work in September at the start of the school year. The school has a daycare for the teachers' children (not on-site), but it sounds rather expensive, and I want to get an idea of whether its typical or not (for 1 child). Is $1,100/month typical for f/t daycare in NYC? How does that compare with sharing a babysitter with another family (which is the other option I'm looking at)? Am I getting hosed if I go with this daycare? TIA.

If you send your child out, it's approximately 5-6 an hour (with a bunch of other kids). Think 9 hours a day times 4 plus 6 hours friday =42 hours times 6 =about 250-260 a week. This is for non-certified babysitting.

1100 doesn't sound like too much.

If you share with another family, it's at least 10 an hour, so cut in half, still five.

I don't think you provided enough details... Where in NYC are you and the daycare located? Daycare and babysitting will be more expensive in Manhattan than in Queens. From what I've heard, Queens is more expensive than Brooklyn. In Brooklyn prices, the women who babysit other people's children in their homes charge anywhere between $4-$8 per hour. A private babysitter in your home (or shared with a friend) can cost anywhere from $8 and up ($8 being at the extreme low end of the range).

STova- I live in Queens, but the school and their daycare are in Manhattan. If I leave him in Queens- whether in daycare or with a sitter- then commuting time must be factored in. The school's daycare is a flat monthly fee, so even if some days he's there fewer hours, I'm still paying that rate. I won't know my schedule until June. Although I'm f/t faculty, that doesn't mean I have to be there every single minute of the school day. I'm not going to have first and last period every single day.

it's still something to consider having your child close by even if you could get a sitter elsewhere.

I've been doing research in brooklyn. How old is your child? I've been sending mine to babysitting for $4.75 per hour.
for the coming year, I'm planning on sending dc to daycare that charges $500 per month from 9-5.
for 2-4 years old.

For what its worth, I work in a day care/sp. ed school in Queens and I think their monthly tuition for day care is 1200/month, but a lot of kids go there on vouchers.
