I spoke to my rabbi on the phone about a volunteering project I'm doing and I needed his assistance and then I called back a few days later to tell him it was no longer necessary and he said to me on the phone, I am very proud of you. do you think he meant that or just being polite? I also didn't say thanks or anything by mistake I just said in return, "thanks for offering". do you think he thought I was rude?

why would he think you were rude first of all you clearly are not, second he is a rabbi and knows not to think negatively of people and he probably assumed that you were caught off guard - also modest people are sometimes uncomfortable with compliments. what you said was fine, you thanked him
