| I used the chocolate torte recipe from here to make cupcakes for my daughter's birthday, between her and her classmate they are allergic to wheat, soy, milk and a few others. I didn't like it. next year I'm making nosh bags or just buying each kid a prize from the dollar store.

| Another idea: buy a box of enjoy life cookies. Have your daughter help you frost them and decorate with sprinkles or whatever. Trust me, at three years old, that is equivalent to her making the cookies herself.

Just spent some time on the phone with his mother -- she cleared cocoa and coconut milk -- yay!
Thank you so much for all the help. I'm going to try two different things and see how they come out.

You could make a nice frosting w. Spectrum Organic Shortening, which is 100% palm oil. I have made a nice frosting w. this plus honey and beet juice for my dd w. Crohn's on the SC diet. Takes forever in the Kitchen-Aid, but comes out in the end
But, since this kid can have sugar, using that would be easier. Cocoa, too?! WOW!
You sound like a very caring and nice person to go through all this for a child's classmate. Kol hakavod.

(I am trying to be lovely now because honestly, when DD hit her first birthday after diagnoses, a neighbor across the street who is now a close friend and has nieces and nephews with multiple allergies, baked DD a safe birthday cake and I actually cried from how thoughtful it was. I know what it feels like to watch your child be excluded and, being slightly nuts, do a lot of imagining for the future too. If the mother of a food-allergic child can't sympathize with another, who can? That being said, I told my husband that next year we have to make sure that there aren't other food-allergic children in DD's playgroup because while we're trying to be fair to him, we aren't being fair to her; she's young enough now to not be bothered but she won't be next year.)
|
As an adult with food restrictions, I cringed and sobbed after DD had her first episode of anaphylaxis and during the blood tests afterwards. I remember thinking that she would have horrid birthday parties where she would feel different than everyone else.
But, after a lot of thought and planning, we came up with the following for her birthday. This worked well for us, but it also may/may not work well for you. DD was born in the summer. For her first and second birthday parties we put out the sprinkler, bubbles, chalk, balls, etc. We invited her playgroup and DH and my families. Instead of cake (which was too complicated for us to deal with) we bought: soy free/dairy free popsicles (variety of flavors), pareve, egg & soy free sorbets (variety of flavors), variety of drinks/juices, sprinkles, different brands of chocolate chips (pareve and milchigs, kept at separate locations), and regular milchig vanilla ice cream. We had something for everyone and thank G-d, nobody needed benedryl or epi-pen. For the most part, the kids didn't even go for the ice cream, they made beelines for the popsicles and sorbets. If I do it again next year, I might not even get the vanilla ice cream.

Hi
Try substituting bananas for eggs - it works pretty well, and you can ice with icing sugar & water.
and as a mother to very allergic kids - thanks for the effort! it makes SO much difference

| @Mommy3.5: the recipe looks great, but the kid is allergic to nuts, which cuts out the almond extract. Unless I use imitation, I guess, but I have no idea of what might be in there that he's allergic to. Have you made it without the extract?

I called up McCormick, the spice company.
The person I spoke with said that almond extract is made using a peach pit. There are no nuts in it and their entire facility is nut free.
I used the imitation stuff, though, and found the smell very overwhelming when it came fresh out of the oven. It was much better after it had cooled down.
Thanks!

I would use real vanilla as opposed to fake almond extract. _________________ mommy to 2 girls, 1 boy
