Okay about Stephen Fry

he is an atheist--therefore he mocks the religions

he is a homosexual--he doesn't like a religion that tells him he can't make love with someone he wants to make love with. I accept that the Torah forbids sodomy, yet I have the utmost compassion for anyone with this nisayon.

He is part of the British intellectual Elite--which makes him ashamed of Israel, since Israel is the whipping boy of these people. Witness Harold Pinter ob'm who was a great playwright, but who, as an intellectual and a Jew, was so ashamed of the state of Israel he made incendiary statements about it..

I have compassion on people like Stephen Fry. We can't know what they are going through. However what makes me temper this compassion with a bit of outrage is in a simple word he uses.
"They" "Them"
I don't think Pinter, even in his most outrageous anti Israel outburst, dared referred to his fellow Jews as "them"

its as is Fry doesn't want people to know he is Jewish, but they do.
this is very sad indeed, but it makes me angry to hear a Jew refer to other Jews as "Them" the "other."
like Philip Roth, he could ridicule the religion, but still identify, honestly as a Jew
Fry chooses not to do this, and this is what makes this clip sad indeed.

I think Judaism-hating Jews would be more apt. They don't hate themselves and they probably don't much identify as Jews other than by accident of birth.

As EiTam said, a lot of them no longer see Jewish as part of who they are; they aren't educated, and therefore see it as a religion, a choice, not a heritage. So they're more easily able to differentiate themselves from "those Jews". Secularly-raised adults tend to think of religion as a choice, and a primitive one at that.

Also, if they encounter negative stereotypes and negative attitudes towards Jews (and religion in general), or things like Zionism, they'll end up wanting to disassociate themselves from that in order to fit into the groups they've chosen. And if they choose to hang out with certain intellectual types, then hating on religion is in vogue. You get former christians who act the same way towards christianity.
