"Ooooo, never post pictures of your kids online, because maybe some unscrupulous individual will take that picture of your kid and be mizdayen on the picture." (Mizdayen is what a pedophile might do if he sees a picture of a kid that turns him on. J.O. in English.)

Am I a bad mom if I frankly don't care what someone does with pics of my kids so long as they don't come near them in real life? Can someone please explain to me the horror of this, because I'm a little dense? (No kids were hurt by his inappropriate act. Its just gross, but so are lots of other things and they don't affect me.)

I post pictures of my family on facebook and occasionally on imamother and I totally agree with you, OP.

If someone wanted to find pictures of children, well, the internet is full of them. Why not go to carters.com or childrensplace.com?... the likelihood that someone with evil intentions would be searching through your photos or my photos is practically nothing. IMO, if it makes people feel more protective, then good for them not to post pictures.

Like I said in another thread, if you're truly worried about what other people might think, you shouldn't take kids out in public places.

well, one thing I do not want is to see my childs face someplace that I didnt put it. once your picture in out on the internet anyone can use it. for example, would you want your kids pic in an ad for a childrens home? or for a child psych center? I wouldnt. and it happens. not often but enough for me to worry about, you may have a different worry-threshold and that's ok.
another thing to consider is that your childs picture is his, and you might want his permission to post it or at least be very sure its a shot he wouldnt be embarrassed about later on.
the thought of a pedophile enjoying my child's picture is seriously repulsive to me but I agree with you,its unlikely and also not something you can prevent short of keeping your kids under lock and key or in burqa's.

I take my kids out, I post pics, I allow the schools to post pics online. I'm from a less paranoid world.

I generally don't put pictures of my child on the internet, and certainly not tagged pictures - but for general privacy reasons, not specifically about "that."

I put pictures on facebook, not too many but enough that friends and family can see pictures of me across the ocean!

I email pictures to people too.

As posters have mentioned above, if someone wanted to find pictures of kids there are so many pictures to find from and if they want to JO to a picture of my child, sick sick them! Nothing I can do about it.

Regarding the gross-out factor, I agree. What they do behind their computer screen is not something I'll ever know and can't afford to waste energy caring about.

But what scares me is the possibility that they could trace the picture and target the child in real life CV. From what I've read, it is not that difficult to get info online that would help a pervert find, identify, and lure a child. And I am suspicious that nothing online is as private as we'd like to believe, no matter what "privacy policies" say. So without calculating the unlikelihood that they'll pick mine, I think the fact that such a possibility is known to exist and HAS happened to SOMEONE, ever, is enough to make me very, very wary.

Plus, everything that granolamom said.

And that's why I almost exclusively stick to sending pictures via personal email and uploading them to sites like Shutterfly because I want to print them, and then I can share from there. It's not like facebook where it could be EASILY linked up with all sorts of other info, subjected to comments and sharing and such.

Seeker you would be surprised of the stories I have heard about shutterfly, snapfish and the likes. My friend heard that people on her snapfish list were getting sent random pictures of other people, from her account/name, it was hacked.

Now a days, unfortunately, anything is possible however careful we are!

You do understand that a legitimate retailer or advertising agency would require a model release, which specifically permits use of an image in connection with advertising, before using a photo.

No one seriously thinks that Gap Kids scours Facebook for photos of kids wearing Gap clothes that are already in the stores, then steals them for advertising use. As to a psych center, make my day. I'd love the college fund to be filled to the overflowing.

I post images. I don't tag them, and I limit them to being viewed by friends.
