| I'm making Pesach just this year. I don't want to invest in a food processor just for one week. Do you think if I bought an inexpensive immersion blender, I could use it to whip up egg whites, mix charoses, etc and use a hand grater for potato kugel and marror? Suggestions? Advise?

| They make immersion blenders with a few attachments including a mini chopper and a whisk that would do all the things you need.

Yes, get one of these. We have 2 braun ones (for the year, not Pesach), one dairy and one parve. It has the blender, chopper (I use it to make potato kugel), and whisk. I never pull out my food processor. They cost about 350 NIS but we well worth it. You can buy a cheap one for about 100 that is just an immersion blender if you don't want to spend so much. _________________ Lucky Mom to 5

| For Pesach, I just use a hand grater, or mash with a fork.

I've decided that the amount of grating and blending I do, it is worthwhile for me to get a food processor/blender combo... _________________

| I've learned to get at least the average quality in electrical gadgets if not they break very quickly and if you have to buy a new one so soon you didn't save anything

what is this chopper thing? it works like a grater? how do you use it for kugel?
a regular food processor would be about 350 NIS too, no?

It has an "S" blade. I don't know how cheap you can get a real food processor. Most of the ones I looked at were around 2000 NIS (I'm sure you could get a cheap one for less though). I like the braun because even though it is small (less to pack away! cheaper!), it is a solidly made machine. I use my parve one several times a week, and I have had it for at least 5 years.

Braun discontinued their hand blenders.
I agree that you should try to get a combo hand held device.
If you cannot, I can help you with recipes that don't need whipped eggs. I only make cakes and cookies that I can mix with a spoon/fork/whisk. _________________ Really Awesome Mom!

I've tried a few handblenders since my Braun died and they are all junk. I've tried the better and cheaper and none can handle what the Braun could and break easily (don't get an Oster the threads are made of plastic and wear VERY quickly).
The immersion blenders I've bought since my Braun can blend soup and semi-frozen fruit. The chopper attachments can cut peppers and tomatoes, but not nuts, I once tried it on Potatoes and it took forever, hand grating is faster. Beating eggs or whip with the beater take a long time. It is good to get a froth on whole eggs, but whipping egg whites takes a while (you can get a cheap hand blender that will do the job MUCH faster)

Just wondering what to avoid if I decide to buy one for Pesach.
I usually don't use it for more than soup, dips, etc.
Also, which part of the Oster hand blender is plastoc and wears quickly?
I'm thinking of Cusinart which is expensive but supposedly good, or Hamilton Beach whose products I am usually happy with.

I have found the all metal Cuisinart to work well. I had several different plastic ones (Cuisinart and others) before and they all cracked right away. The metal ones have been doing very well. _________________ Want to lose weight fast? Want to keep it off easily?

oster - http://www.amazon.com/Oster-26.....amp;sr=1-1
the part that holds the blade in place and connects it to the motor got eaten away very quickly, it was all plastic threads. So I had to push down against the pot while blending to hold the blade or it would fall out. Eventually I tossed it.
I now have a GE http://www.walmart.com/ip/GE-Immersion-Blender/16456574 that blends but the I find the the way it shapes doesn't allow it to blend easily, you have to move it around the pot a lot. And you have to push the button with all your might and its tiring. I should have read the reviews before buying.

| I went out and bought an immersion blender w/ the attachments. It was just 129NIS!! It was on sale cuz the box was messed up. Even if it's not gr8 quality, it's only for one year. Thanks for the advise I'm really excited!

| I just used my last plastic unit (Oster) and it cracked. All I was doing was pureeing soup. Now I will go out and replace it too with an all metal Cuisinart unit.
