To those of you who have only babies at home, no older children:
When your dh is not home and its only you and the babies at home, will you shower while they're sleeping??
I used to always wait for dh to come home so that I could shower, but hes crazy busy at work, coming home at 2 am and leaving at 6 am. So at night when the kids are sleeping, I take my shower. But am always nervous, imagining them waking up and crying etc.
My showers are only 5-10 min long, but still nervous.
What do you all do???

| I shower. If you're really nervous, leave the door open so you're more likely to hear, and if you can, don't turn on the fan. Also, it's not the end of the world if your baby cries for the little bit of time between when they wake up and when you can get out of the shower.

| If it is a time that you know your child should be sleeping (went to sleep not too long ago, ate well, not gassy, not teething, not sick etc.) then even if your child woke up--what would you do for them? Often children wake up at night and just need to cry themselves back to sleep, if they are crying for longer or at an escalated pitch, then I would go in. I don't think its beyond the scope of reason to take a shower.

You guys are right. Of course, its not the end of the world if he cries for a few minutes. But you know just to check on them to make sure he's not crying cuz of something serious...throwing up, stuck in the bars of the crib, etc.....thats all.
I guess I'm just too nervous and need to chill!

| How old are your kids? Do they wake up randomly at night? I was worried when my first was a newborn. But now ? He can survive 10 min of crying.

| I would deff take a quick shower for 5-10 minutes, leave the door open. I dont see why not. As long as they are safe in a crib/bassinet, if they cry for two minutes nothing will happen.

Agreed!
Also, a lot of times, babies and toddlers will wake up for a second, cry a few times and then go right back to sleep... I am never quick to pick up a sleeping baby if it'a time when they should be napping and when there's nothing else going on (teething, illness...etc) that would cause them to wake up. _________________ See my ad to buy pregnancy tests and ovulation tests in Israel for a great price. http://imamother.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=136877&highlight=pregnancy+tests

Yes for sure. If he cries too much you can always stop the shower. _________________

I shower when my kids sleep.
I also sleep when my kids sleep.
I probably hear them faster when I'm in the shower then when I'm sleeping.

Ditto-I was going to ask whether the OP slept while her kids slept- IMHO- you do not need to hover over your kids 24/7, they should be sleeping in a safe crib or bassinet where nothing dangerous can happen to them in 10 minutes.

I would shower. But again, I'm a cry-it-out-er.

I would take the shower...it's better that they are sleeping than awake. Believe me!
I had a newborn, 2 year old and 4 year old. I was a few days postpartum, terribly engorged and just couldn' t wait another minute and had to take a shower to relieve some of the engorgment. I heard the 2 year old and 4 year old laughing while I was in the shower, but thought they were at worst touching inappropriate parts of their body, but I couldn't function...I was only a few days postpartum and felt horrible!! (think motzei shabbos and just sooo engorged...couldn't think straight!)
Well, it turned out the two of them were boucing the baby up and down on the bed!!! Gasp!!!
So if baby is asleep in crib with everybody else sleeping...go for the shower THEN!

| I would shower but not for that long. I would do a quick quick shower basic.

| I would firstly relax and realize nothing will happen to a baby crying in his crib. it happens to my fifth all the time when im tending to someone else. obvoiusly its not ideal, but it wont scar them. when I shower with a baby who may wake up I just turn off the water once or twice in between. DONT WORRY SO MUCH!!!!

This!!
Do relax. How are you sleeping if you are so worried about taking a 10 min shower? Now with a toddler loose in the living room, I'd wait. But nap time, in cribs, no problem. _________________ black sheep wrote: Trauma doesn't ruin lives; never recovering from trauma ruins lives.

| I don't go to my babies within the first 5-10 minutes of them crying anyway, so what's the difference if I'm in the shower, eating a snack, or doing laundry? If you are really paranoid about it, take a monitor into the bathroom with you when you shower - if a baby should cry, you'll know it right away and can hurry up.
