Noa or Naomi?

What do you think?
We are MO and live in NYC.
Most of our families live in Israel or Europe.

for a girl, I personally think Naomi is nicer. Noa is a bit too unisex sounding, though I know in israel unisex names are common

My name is Naomi and my daughter's name is Noa - not pronounced like Noah the boy - different stress in the sounds. My husband loves the name - I'm not the biggest fan to be honest.

Pros and cons each way, of course.

Noa - expect all non-Jews (and not-clued-in Jews) to think she's a boy.
Naomi - English and Hebrew pronunciations are very different - expect mispronunciations if you prefer one way over another.

Both are lovely names.

just a little info for those that don't know.

Noa is not Noach, nor is it unisex.
Noa was one of bnos tzelafchad.

So Op it's a good name if you want to remind your child of the strength of women. But Cm does present a good point about non Jews thinking it's a boys name.

I was against Noa until I found out that it is indeed a tanachi name.That made me think it would be easier to pronounce ...
I'm still very torn...

I think both names are beautiful. I actually considered both names myself but now that my son is Noam, there's no way I could use either Smile

Even though Noa is a tanachi name, most people don't know it and assume you wanted to sound "cool" because it is still not so common in the states.
Naomi will for sure be mispronounced until you decide how you want it. It's not "common" yet but people will not ask you to repeat the name when they hear it or explain whether is it a unisex name.
Anyways, it's basically a question of taste and it is therefore your decision to make.

I dont think it matters that pple wont know its a girl. I hv a girl and everyone thinks shes a boy! plus my cousin is noa so I dont see a prob with that. its pretty and unique

In Israel Noa is a modern popular name. Naomi is more common in an older crowd. But in the US I hear Naomi a lot more.

Both are nice names!

I take back the part about naomi being 'only' a charedi name. I do know one DL woman with that name, but it's very common in charedi circles.

I prefer Naomi.

Noa is very trendy in Israel right now... I'm not a fan of trendy names.

in england naomi is not such a rare name, it is used amongst all Jews and I was at university with a girl called Naomi who wasn't Jewish. although it's a Jewish name, it is not one of those names that stands out as a Jewish name - if you know what I mean. it's a lovely name

I thought of you today when I heard and was thus reminded of a compromise to your question. A popular name here for girls here in Israel, is Noam. My teens say they really like that name. Just thought to pass that on to you.
