I have a massive collection of files I have found and created for teaching. I've hopped around a lot so I have things for every subject and grade level. It's insane, yet I'm not really interested in parting with any of it... yet.

Folders are too limiting for me. I can file something in more than one folder but that just creates extra files, takes up extra space, and still is too much like work and usually doesn't end up any easier to find, especially going through multiple layers of folders (should I sort first by subject then grade level? or...)

I love how online you can give an item multiple tags and/or categories. However I am NOT looking to upload my vast collection to the internet. It would take forever and be way too much for any free site, and I have no need to buy online storage. I have an external hard drive with everything.

Is there any way, any program or something (preferably free or inexpensive?) that will let you tag files on your computer or hard drive and then search/filter by the tags?

And if there isn't, there should be. I can only assume, though, that I'm the zillionth person to have this idea and it's already patented by three different companies Razz

P.S. I'm on a PC with Vista

P.P.S. It would be cool to be able to rate/star files too Smile

Maybe I just don't have great search skills but so far I haven't turned up anything that looks like what I want... sigh. It HAS to exist, so I'll keep hunting maybe someday when I'm not falling asleep...
