Disclaimer: This really belongs in the Chassidishe Velt, but I am not a member of that section. I am basically looking for responses from chaseedishe posters whose sons have gekrazelte payos (or what my sons call gerollte payos Laughing ) If you're Litvish or MO or even Ger or Breslov Wink your responses will probably not be so helpful...

My dh and I have an ongoing disagreement as to the length of our kids' payos. He thinks that chassidishe boys never or rarely cut their payos and they should be at least shoulder length. I think that is crazy and messy looking and that "real" (as opposed to tzigekimine) chassidishe parents keep their kids' payos much shorter. (Dh is chassidish but comes from a yekkish family and had almost no exposure to chassidishe kids during his formative years; I am not so chassidish but grew up with lots of chassidish cousins and NONE of their kids had long, messy payos.) It doesn't help that two of my kids have stick-straight hair and dh doesn't let me use any krazzling aids.

The kids we're talking about are 3, 4 and 7. Satmar, Belz, Bobov mothers - how long are your kids' payos at those ages?

my mother would cut my brother's payos once it got past chin lengrth. my neighbor never cuts her boys payos and one lady in the bungalow colony said they don't cut them, only burn them.

We're MO, but DH insists on peyos. My 4 year old has peyos down to his chin, I trim it when it gets longer. It's also stick straight and can get kind of messy. We have an upcoming wedding and I'm thinking of using a curling iron to curl it...

I sincerely hope she doesn't use fire to do that, waiting to hear a normal explanation for that.....

If I'm not mistaken, I think it's belz that doesn't cut but burn, and yes, with a small fire. It's not as dangerous as you think.

Belz burns payos? Shocked Uh oh. We are renegade Belzer then, I guess.

So, so far I hear that real chassidishe little boys have payos not longer than chin-length. Three and four year olds have payos shorter than that. This is sounding pretty good so far. Anyone else want to chime in?

My son's is chin length. By that I mean that it reaches his chin when stretched out, but is actually only about jaw bone length when curled.

A belz family on my block has a boy with loooooooong curled peyos and his mother did them up in pins every day but they used to get messy. She finally cut them a little longer than chin length when curled.

My son's is chin length curled. Neat, and not with a whole glob of hair on top. Cut neatly so the payos aren't meeting in the middle of the head--that's what usually causes the messiness.

Klausenberg are the ones that don't cut payos--hair doesn't burn, it singes, so when held to fire- far away from the face since the payos are so long-they just singe off.

It's like singeing the end of a ribbon--it doesn't catch fire, it just singes.

Same here. Also, don't leave a whole lot of hair around the temples. It makes the head look big.

Not chassidish but there are some chassidish boys in Mati's school, and some are curled, some not, some in front, some behind, some longer than shoulder, some very short, etc.

Having just made upsheren we researched this...

Some chassidusen think ger, belz etc have a minhag not to cut peyos at all, this means that they get very long, and afterwards stuffed up the kappel, twisted around the ears etc.

Many other chassidusen cut. Those descending from Sanz, or who keep the minhogim of Sanzer Rov, think bobov, klausenburg etc have a very strict minhag not to let Peyos grow below chin length - think both peyos meeting in middle of the chin length.
This gives them a shorter look when curled. The Sanzer Ruv considered that hair below the chin as tumah, and not part of the kedushah of peyos.

We trim our sons peyos by burning. Yes, a tiny match, done only by adults and of course matches are out of reach of children at all times. Cut nails are burnt as well.

Dh cuts their hair and insists on a big shiur over there. That battle has already been lost. Now if I can only win the payos length skirmish, I'll be happy.
