Is there any setting up to be done for an infant car seat before a baby uses it for the first time? _________________

| If it comes with a base, yes, you need to install the base. Should take 5 min tops.

You mean other than installation? I would definitely try that even if you aren't keeping it in the car just to make sure you can get a good install and know where the anchors are if you have LATCH, etc.
And I assume you mean an infant-only seat (not a convertible)...
You might want to double check that the straps are in the lowest slot and pretty tight, but you will need to make your own adjustments when baby is put in the first time.
You might want to have a receiving blanket rolled up put away with the seat to help keep baby's head propped up. _________________ http://a-natural-birth.com

Different vehicles work differently with different brands, and depending on the method of installation, it can potentially take longer to get a secure install. Most seats are not installed correctly, and I don't want anyone to feel like it can be a rush job.
Once you get the hang of how the seat works in your car, it goes a lot quicker.

| My midwives don't want me to drive in labor or right after the birth, and my DH does not drive, so we will probably get a car service to and from the birthing center. Should I take the base with me?

I had a Graco Snugride - you could thread the seatbelt right through the slits on the side of the car seat, no base needed for a quick ride home.
If you have the carseat already, you can see if it has such a feature.

No harness front adjuster? Ok, you will have to take several minutes to get it tight through the back part, but since you're not using the seat frequently, it's fine. I'm not sure how tight it is now, but it might be worth it to tighten it in advance so you have minimal adjustments by discharge.
I don't drive for 2 weeks postpartum I'm glad others also refrain from driving, because people think I'm nuts.

That's not what I meant
A 5 pt harness is standard these days in all car seats in America.
I meant the more expensive Graco snugrides (over $110) have a lever and strap in the front where the baby sits to make it easier to loosen and tighten the straps.
The cheaper ones (frequently bought at Walmart/Kmart/Target) don't have this and you have to pull on the straps in the back of the seat and sort of rethread them to make it tighter.

I thought no driving for 2 weeks postpartum was standard protocol.
But back to the OP's question, definitely don't bring the base if it's just a one time ride. And the straps on the cheaper snugrides are really not a big deal to adjust it shouldn't take too long.

It used to be standard protocol, but I see no one keeping it unless they have C-sections...
I see mothers driving to their son's brissim....with a bunch of other little kids in tow. It can't be good for them

I asked in advance, maybe others don't ask
