| |
No poll here -- too many possibilities.
If you bentch licht on olive oil, how do you light them (from pre-existing flame) on the night of yom tov sheni? A candle is easy -- you just take it to the flame and light it and then light the other candles from it. You can't do that with oil unless you are also lighting a candle (which I do not normally do).
Most of the time I have guests here bentching on candles so they light from the pre-existing flame, but many people hold not to light one licht off of another one, so that doesn't help for the oil ones.
Is there any way around other than for me to light a candle in addition to the oil licht?
Note -- per our minhag, we only bentch 2 licht. _________________ Want to lose weight fast? Want to keep it off easily?

We light a 48 hour candle before yom tov and keep it near the licht. I light a match from the candle. Light my 2 candles and drop the match on a metal surface and let it burn out on its own.
Once the 48 hour candle went out and I lit a tea light from the gas stove and used that.

Yes, that works. I just hate having extra unnecessary (for licht) candles around. Is this truly the only solution with oil licht?
Note: for many years I used candles (first regular, then the neronim type), and only switched to oil a number of years ago (and didn't grow up with it) which I suppose is why this bothers me.

| We actually have a great oil lamp that is very decorative and has a small wick (well the outside part is small), if we fill it, it will burn long enough for a three day yom tov. I light a match on that and then light my licht and then put the match down to burn out on a metal tray (or in the sink, depending)

Can you use the flame from the stove-top?
Re those that mentioned lighting a match from the flame - this is interesting to me. I always thought using a match was problematic.

I light parafin and light a 48 hour candle to have a flame all well, for us it would be Chag going into SHabbat or Shabbat going into Chag or Rosh Hashana.
BTW, you also need it for the Havdalah candle when necessary. _________________

I could do that (and I've learned there's no halachic problem), but it is too far from my stovetop to where I bentch licht to keep the match lit.

| I use left over Chanukah candles. I then stand it in a glass of water so it goes out safely without my blowing it out.

If you mean for havdalah when yom tov is motzei Shabbos, no we don't need it then. We use the existing lit Shabbos licht in their place (we don't put them together -- there are halachic issues with that on yom tov) which are right next to the person making kiddush/havdalah.

I don't think I'd like the look of a chanukah candle around (which we don't have at all anyways as we only use oil for chanukah -- no kids here) any better. Plus, we wouldn't put it in water on YT, there can be problems with that. We don't even put water in under the oil for the licht on YT (this is when filling them on YT itself).

They bring a candle to the fire on the stovetop. It's no problem to get a lit candle from the stovetop to the licht, but it's too far to bring a lit match.

| So light a tea light from the stove and then light the match from the tea light to light your oil.

I learnt that it is problematic to use the match part but no problem to use the other end so that's what I do. It's just a simple piece of wood.

That is no problem, but then I've got an extra candle (in the form of the tea lite) burning which is what I'd like to avoid, though I doubt I'll find a way to accomplish that

Yes, but not every yom tov sheni is yizkor. Obviously when it is yizkor, that works.

| I use oil and also candles so I don't have this problem. I light one of my candles with the fire from stove top or from 48 hr candle.
