Washing Machines in Apt. Buildings

We just moved to an apartment building in Brooklyn and want to put in our own washing machine. We heard that other tenants have done the same.

Can I buy a 3.4 cubic feet washing machine or am I limited to a 1.6 cubic feet washing machine? Is there a general rule?

you need to ask the landlord.

My neighbor told me that the lease says I can get a machine! I am so happy! I just bought an avanti w757 and it holds 1/2 a load. She said it works if I don't overload it.

This is great. If we ever need to break our lease, it will be easier to find a new tenant now that we have a washing machine installed. We paid $150 for the super to install it to the pipes under the sink. I have to hang it out to dry, though, because I didn't want a dryer.
