| |
I'm looking for a high school for a girl who is weak academically, but strong hashkafos. She is willing to work hard, just might get a 70 on a test she studied a few hours for. She's the type that as long as the school knows she is trying and paying attention in class, she doesn't care about her actual grade. She participates, follows rules, doesn't cause issues or machlokes in class.
Her mother (family friend) is looking for a high school within driving distance of tri-state area (I know that's kind of broad, but don't want to be specific.) Something with tracks so that at least she has a chance academically.
She needs a place like BY Denver, but her parents just would rather her a car ride away, not a plane ride. She wouldn't come home every shabbos, they just want more than Succos and Pesach.
Is there such a school on the east coast?

| Also, it could be a train away...Boston? Scranton? Rhode Island?

| Boston's Bais Yakov HS is a good choice. A close relative of mine just finished there, and she sounds very similar to the child you refer to. They gave her a lot of academic support, and it's a pretty small and cozy school. I don't know if the distance would work for her, it's about 4 hours from brooklyn but maybe it's closer to your friend's family? I would recommend it highly, my relative was so happy there and she is in a good seminary now and really turned out so well.

| If your friend doesn't mind a Sefardi school, BYJS may work for her daughter. It is about an hour away from Bkln and 1/2 hr. from Lkwd. I heard some Lkwd girls go there for school.

| maybe she means that it's tracked? A lot of schools don't have tracking anymore. It's a pity.

Op here-decided to stop being anon b/c I keep forgetting to click it and no one really knows who I'm talking about anyway...
I didn't mean in any way that Denver is weak- I heard from people that went there that it's a warm, friendly place that doesn't only focus on the actual report card, but the girl as a whole. And yes, I meant that they have tracks and the girls who are in the lower tracks aren't made to feel like losers. I know some geniuses that went there.
Could you tell me more about Boston? What type of hashkafos? Is it called BY Boston? I tried googling some schools but it's funny how a school goes by one name, but is really called another officially- I got totally lost.
Anyone know about Sliver Spring?
She doesn't need completely Yeshivish- we're also oot and respect people's differences, but still a BY atmosphere.
Thanks everyone! Knew I could count on you!

Sorry, it came out the wrong way. I think that's a great school for anyone. I suggested it but they want something closer.
I use the term "weak" for lack of better word. She's not dumb, she tries hard, it's just not reflected in her grades. Whatever, not trying to get philosophical here, just need practical advice, number of students, school phone numbers, do they accept boarders, etc.
Hope that's clarified.

Thanks
RabbiHorowitz.com has a list of schools with brief descriptions.
Right now it looks like Boston and BY D'Rav Hirsch in Monsey (think it used to be known as Broyers) are the two that we'll look into. Any experiences, please share.
It's so crazy how girls are so pressured to do well academically.
green amother- thanks for your input, I will definitely pass it on, it sounds encouraging.

| I don't like to stereotype, but aren't Brooklyn schools known for being huge and girls kind of get swallowed up in the crowd? Correct me if I'm wrong, especially about this school. Is this also a big school? thanks!

| I know that it is a newer school (under the auspices of Reb. Kalmanowitz).Generally newer schools are smaller. I just know someone who goes there.

um...you do know that one of the pre-requesites for going to that school is to...take your meds. While there is nothing wrong with that, but how can you suggest a school that has girls that are emotionally disturbed or extremely troubled???? Op said that the girl in question is just academically weak.

| Bais yaakov Oz Vhodor is a small high school. They have a very solid curriculim but also offer many ways to shine non- academically. Reb. Kalmonowitz cares about every girl.

Bais Kaila in Lakewood is like that....very warm school, and they have tracks that can accommodate various levels, from very bright to weaker academically.
But good luck getting someone from out of Lakewood into a Lakewood high school.....
