I'm finally ready to invest in a GOOD camera. I am not a professional photographer (I'm an amateur actually) but want a professional camera for taking pictures of my kids and for other personal use.

So what do you recommend?

I have the Canon rebel t1i (reg and zoom lens) and love it! I get awesome pics of my kid Smile (saves time from going to studios)

One thing I recommend would be always use manual and research Aperture, Shutter, ISO.

The camera with reg lens(almost $250 less than when I bought it)

The Zoom lens (great for kid pics (they run around Smile )

If you want an entry level professionl camera you can get the canon EOS Rebel XT or Nikon D3100 which is going to give you all professional settings. The best point and shoot camera which also has most of the professional settings is the latest canon power shot S100.

Canon rebel series is good. I have the T3i. The problem with SLR cameras is that to take it to a really professional level you need a good lens which is not cheap, something like this http://www.amazon.com/Tamron-28-75mm-Aspherical-Canon-Digital/dp/B0000A1G05. (and even that is not high end)

Could be that there are less expensive cameras that will suit your needs just as well, being that you don't need to use it for professional purposes and hook it up to lighting etc. I actually think a point and shoot (smaller camera) has the advantage of being easier to carry around, therefore making sure you don't miss a good capture.

You could look into a micro-four thirds camera like this one. They are similar to DSLR, but smaller. Sony and Nikon also make these.

The one that Daisy linked is for more professional use, and glamor shots. not for taking an awesome picture of your kids.

these will give you professional quality shots with a user friendly camera.

What features would you like the camera to have? Are you planning on learning to shoot manual? The camera is only as good as the photographer (I know, not entirely) and getting a good camera without learning how to use it really well is pointless.

The reason I linked to the micro four thirds is because I am considering it. OP said she was in ISO of professional camera for personal use. That made me think of an entry level dslr. I originally got one, but sold it because it was too bulky, so I started looking into micro four thirds. I did some more research and am still undecided between the lumix lx5 (high end point and shoot) or gf3 (micro four thirds). The zs8 and zs9 also look good and have great reviews, but not sure if they are good for low-light (always an issue).

Another high end point and shoot with good reviews is the canon s95.

I'm interested in input from others too.
