my son also had therapy at 1.5 maybe even earlier, he was barely talking so he had speech. to the poster above, what is the big deal?

in regards to also having adhd, I'm the poster who mentioned pandas. another symptom of pandas can be adhd behavior. it doesn't mean everyone has pandas. but with kids who have pandas there are usually CLEAR correlations of major differences in hyperactive behavior, OCD behaviors, stuttering etc. unfortunately I know all too well about this. Sad

My daughter had a bad stuttering problem for years. We never ever mentioned it or took her for help. I only recall once saying to her that she should try to think what she's going to say before she says it. Otherwise, zilch. Stuttering can get alot worse if you make the child self-conscious. Ignore it unless she/he's a teenager.

I forgot to mention the most important part, the stuttering is completely gone BH".

There are thousands of causes/reasons for stuttering. And I believe stuttering is more common among boys. It will not go away on its own (by ignoring it) in all cases. Not all kids outgrow it.

OP, if your DS was 3 or 4 years old, I would agree that ignoring is the way to go. But your DS is 7 and suffering and ignoring it is not the way to go.

PANDAS may be the issue. I believe it's just a simple blood test. Have his pediatrician do that.

Take your DS to Phil Schneider for an evaluation and see what he has to say. You don't have to treat with him, but his insights would be very helpful.

And try the chiropractor. They are GREAT for ADHD kids as well. My DS has some sensory perception issues, and he has been doing so well with the adjustments.

Sorry, Merrymom, but if I had an overweight 7 year old, I wouldn't ignore it, I would take the child to a nutritionist and doctor. I stuttered as a child and my parents ignored it, and it went away. But my stutter was very mild. My brother stuttered terribly and my parents ignored his too, and he suffered some major trauma from it. Oh, and his stuttering is gone too. But why go through that trauma if it can be avoided?

My son is a severe stutterer.
In his case it was not genetic, as no-one on either side stutters.

He had speech therapy four times a week for many years.
We aslo tried many different alternative treatments for dysfluency.

The thing that helped him most was being comfortable about his stuttering and not being embarrassed by it.
If you PM I will let you know about the program that I felt was most benefical in helping overcome his stuttering and his fear of stuttering.

He is now 26, married with a family and successful in a job that requires him to speak to many different people all day.
He still stutters occasionally but it does not effect his life.

as a (former) stutterer who never received therapy (I don't think my mother ever thought about that as an option) one bit of advice is PLEASE try your hardest not to get frustrated w/ your son. be patient while he's trying to work his way through a word. it's so hard and frustrating to know what you want to say and not to be able to get the words out (I actually stopped talking for a loooong time until I was able to alter my vocabulary. I stopped using certain words and other words w/ letter combinations that were too difficult for me to get out.)
I don't live in the states so I dont know what resources are available but as a parent I would try my hardest to get my child whatever services I could. also, I remember being evaluated by the board of ed. I dont know if they can help you in any way.
good luck to you and you can let your son know there's s/o else out there rooting for him.

Thx for all the help...I will definately try the chiro....and will have him tested for PANDAS...eventhough His neurologist has said he probably doesn't have it based on the testing that he has done on him. I will try to get in contact with Phil Schneider and take it from there...Thanks for all the recommendations.

Great site with PANDAS information. http://intramural.nimh.nih.gov/pdn/web.htm It looks like a child must have OCD or a tic in order to be diagnosed with PANDAS.

I just read this now. I don't if anyone still looks at this, but you need to call Phil Schneider. He is an expert. This is for parents for younger kids too. There are certain methods he also uses for a 3-4 year old that can only be used at that age, (and other methods for older children and adults).

My 8 year old stutters badly too, I took him to Phil Schneider for almost 2 years, did not help at all, he gets worse as he gets older, and now his friends have no patience to listen to him. We've tried Simeon Blitman in boro park but to no avail, it's only now just starting to bother him, and I don't know if any other good therapists in the Brooklyn area

Ray family, kudos for ur post. I have to bite my tongue to keep from yelling at my son in frustration, it hurts so much to listen to him, but I have to remind myself how much harder it is for him... Thing is he doesn't seem to mind it so much, he's not interested in doing the therapy, and it's just me and dh pushing him to even try...is that going to do more harm than good?
