Inspired by the maternity underwear thread from another amother!
I CANNOT STAND the maternity clothes I see. The cut is awful, the colours too, one is left to wonder why a pregnant woman would want davka only ultra long but very low cut tunics and why skirts have to be minimini or sweep the floor.
The most expensive brands are pure theft, and very old ladyish.
Buying regular plus sizes clothes is out, because the arms, neck... hang.
WHY OH WHY is it so hard to find a simple straight or A line skirt, knee or calf length? what about a top I don't have to wear a shell under and that breaks on the hips and doesn't look like a nightgown?
I am ready to buy online, on any site that sends international for a normal fee and will take back for free or normal cost if the size doesn't fit...

| I don't know what your price range is, but I found some pretty things at Ann Taylor Loft's online maternity line. Did you try Destination Maternity? Nordstrom's maternity? If you do a Google search, you'll find many maternity shops.

Some of these sites posted have stuff for really expensive- who can afford to spend $30- $45 on a shirt? Is that really what is considered cheap these days? Also motherhood has the same prices.
Are there any stores like Marshalls or something that will sell maternity clothes for like $15-30?

The problem with old navy and gap is that most returns have to be via mail which means that you lose out on money. Besides their stuff is expensive too.

I think it is too much, unfortunately, to think you're going to find cute tsnius maternity for so little money. That's just the reality. It's hard enought to find regular clothes that look great at that price. So you buy less pieces but ones that you really like. Each pregnancy, g-d willing, you had a few more pieces and just look for stuff that isn't too trendy.
You can also buy regular nonmaternity skrts, for cheap at Marshalls or wherever, and learn how to add a maternity waistband.

Jcpenney.com many times has maternity things under $20.
I got polos from them several years ago for $6-$7. Button down shirts as well. I have no idea what selection they have now, but you can take a look. _________________ http://a-natural-birth.com

I haven't been pregnant in well over a decade, but it seems some things never change!
Maternity clothing is very expensive, and the designers think you want to show your legs and bosom. I recall in 1999 a plain button-front long sleeve cotton shirt from Lord and Taylor was $98. I didn't buy it, and just hoped I would have the baby before the weather got cool (I did).
Normally-priced clothing will disintegrate shortly before the baby is born - that's how you can tell when you are about to go into labor. I don't know how the selection is nowadays, but I was able to find basic clothing - not necessarily "young" or "pretty" - at JC Penney and Sears (although my favorite Sears jumper self-destructed about two weeks early).

I don't know if this is practical, but do you have a friend you could borrow from? I managed not to buy any maternity clothes until about 2 weeks before my due date, and that was mainly because I was sick of everything and wanted something nice for Shavout, which was right around the corner. Of course, I'll be back to sqaure one with the next baby, but that's life.
I also found that I could wear a lot of my tops even 9 months on. If you have a lot of really tailored things that won't work though. The other thing is that if you don't like wearing a shell under, wear an open cardigan or shrug over. There was also a website I found called something like half-tees.com (don't remember quite, sorry) that sold shells that stopped right under your breasts. I never actually purchaced anything, but that might be an option for shells.
One final note, I don't know if you have the time or the abilty, but you could try making your own. The major pattern companies do make materinity patterns (although I don't know how they are) and then it will certainly fit you right. If you don't want to make dresses from stratch, it might be possible to buy the plus sizes and tailor them so the other parts (non-belly) fit properly.
Good luck!

Thanks ladies! I had some success with the wesbites!
I'm not crafty at all, and would have zero patience to sew I also would rather avoid paying a seamstress... though in last resort I will buy plus size and have someone take them in.

Hi,
Sorry am a little late in responding but I know how hard it can be to find nice maternity...I bought a top from Carsons in Chicago (equivalent of JC Penney) and though I loved it for my first pregnancy, it just didn't look so nice by the second one, didn't age so well after many washes...
I would check www.prelegant.com
It is definitely more expensive that GAP etc but trendy and great quality. Everything comes from Europe and they do returns with free shipping in case you don't like what you got. I own a top from there and am very happy with it.
Good Luck!
