| Of course, he was not the first American president who did that. He should try something more inventive - to host a Purim mishte, par example. If King Ahashverosh (some people used to call him Ahashverosh ha-rasha) held a banquet, a politically correct one, with kosher food and drink for his Jewish citizens, why he wouldn't do a similar thing. As King Solomon would say, there is nothing new under the Sun.

It's the difference between showing respect for another religion, and actively participating.
And it's the difference between doing something at the right time and the wrong time. Politicians here also acknowledge other holidays, for example with Peres firing a cannon to mark the start of Ramadan. Imagine how it would look if he fired the cannon two weeks early because he had things to do on actual Ramadan. |
what if the start of ramadan cooincided with yom kippur?
With x-mas, parties are often held in the weeks and even months leading up to it. So it probably seemed fine to white house staff to arrange a chanuka celebration a week or two early, since this year chanuka and xmas so closely coincide.
Raising awareness of a Jewish holiday is wonderful.

A chanukah celebration would be fine. Lighting the menorah early isn't.
It's not comparable to an early xmas party because it's the religious observance of the holiday. A better comparison IMO would be holding Xmas day mass early.
I'm not sure how much it counts as raising awareness of a Jewish holiday. Americans already know that chanukah means menoras. And even if they didn't - what's the point of knowing just that?

Hatzlacha! Zaq dear you are right thank you for pointing out why my original post was not clear. My Grammar stinks.
Here was another post I wrote to clarify my annoyance with him.

Thank you Ora for understanding what I meant and not making me feel stupid.
Zaq everything does not need to be made intoa black and white issue. Because he did this does not mean I hate him. I do think it was very disrespectful.
