Why in the toddler section?

I think the sports books by Matt Christopher would be age appropriate, Dick King Smith, some of Andrew Clements

Wait, you said - not a book?

Matt Christopher is sports, Dick King Smith are kind of fantasy in a realistic interesting sense - they are great kids books. Are you looking for something scientific? Let me think on that - or I'm sure someone else has ideas...

There is a book list on chinuch.org that I usually consult when I want to buy my ds (now 12 y.o) secular books. I look at the appropriate books for his age range and look them up online to see what they are about and then purchase the ones that have story-lines that we think he'd enjoy. We've done pretty well with that method in the past.

not quiet sure what subject I want the book to be about, but just want to know what to search for in terms of his age. I guess I can see the titles when I search and decide it I think he'll like it. smart boy, fast reader... any other ideas?

I think that 11 is well past Matt Christopher. Of course, I also think that Matt Christopher is the worst author ever to have been published.

It may well be a bit old for Andrew Clements as well. I'm not familiar with Dick King Smith.

Has he read Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series?

They're aimed at 10 and up, but an 11 year old would certainly enjoy them.

Barbara, if he is still reading Magic School Bus, I'm going to guess that he is reading a bit below age level - the magic school house books (even the 'older' ones) are geared for 2nd-maybe 3rd graders... a lower level book may be more appropriate.

John Grisham has a new series (there are only 2 in the series so far) called Theodore Boone.
I preread the books to make sure of their appropriateness, and I think the first one especially, Kid Detective, would be great for an 11 year old boy.

I personally love the Percy Jackson books, but the content is based on avoda zara (Greek gods), so bear that in mind.

If he's reading a little bit below age level, then you might want to think about getting him a graphic novel (a novel in comic book form). Most boys love that and they sell many books in that format. Again, be careful of content because once it's in comic book form many of the pictures may be inappropriate depending on the audience. When my son had just turned 7 years old he read almost the entire Goosebumps series (which is usually geared for older than that) in graphic novel form.

Not a graphic novel, but an excellent series is the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer. My son enjoyed those.

Harry Potter? Roald Dahl books? (My nephews are into those but they're a little younger.) Hardy Boys? I know my brother used to sneak our Babysitters Club books Smile but don't think your nephew would appreciate it if you bought him those!

I was going to suggest this!

He might also like The Great Brain series - which also might be slightly below his level, but any pre-adolescent boy would get a good laugh out of those! Or maybe "A Series of Unfortunate Events"? I can't imagine any secular kid today hasn't read/watched Harry Potter, so I'm not sure that would be appreciated.

I was not impressed by A Series of Unfortunate Events. I would want to know the child before recommending it.

The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart is a great book, higher reading level than magic tree house mainly because it is longer.

harry potter is great, if he hasn't read them but the last few are a little scary and mature. What do his parents let him read?

I think a series of unfortunate events are cute, my kids were recently enjoying them. I don't think they liked artemis fowl.

roald dahl is also good.

A Series of Unfortunate Events

Haroun and the Sea of Stories and Luka and the Fire of Life by Salman Rushdie. Luka is the sequel but it's actually a little younger in tone and language -- or maybe just more modern. Anyway, I'd highly recommend them.

Coraline! (Neil Gaiman says kids aren't scared by it, unlike adults. I have no idea if that's true).
