| The title says it all. I need to make a batch of chicken soup tonight (for a reason I don't want to go through right now but it needs to be ready by tomorrow). Usually I keep chicken carcase and giblets in the freezer but I ran out of it and the closest I can get hold of is a couple of turkey necks. Do you think I can use it like chicken to make soup out of them? They look pretty decent sized, meaty, not fatty at all.

| My mom does that. My siblings who love turkey love it.

| So long as it's meaty broth it should do. I thought of adding chicken soup powder but didn't want to add MSG. Thanks both. I'll let you know how it comes out (I'm using a crockpot)...

| No need for chicken soup powder. You can put any meat item in soup for flavor. I sometimes put cubes of beef stew. My mom also puts lamb sometimes...Any meat or poultry will do.

| well, yes, you can make soup from turkey necks, but then it's turkey soup, not "chicken" soup. The taste is decidedly different. Why be coy about it? Turkey soup is just as good as chicken soup, only different.

I almost always make my chicken soup this way. Sometimes I add chicken necks as well, and often I take the meat off the bones and add it back in. _________________ But then again, I'm a dragon.

| Thanks everyone. In the end, the soup came out nicely though agree it has distinctly different colour and flavour from the usual chicken soup. it came out more like a cross between chicken soup and what we call beef tea made from shin of beef (that's yum, too). I actually like it better because it's far less fatty (yes the one I get here comes without skin or blobs of fats) and there's so much meat around the bone.

| Reviving this thread because Thanksgiving is next week in the US and I make stock out of the turkey neck and wing tips to use in my justifiably-famous gravy. I also repurpose the carcass for soup after I've carved all the meat off (usually the carcass is broken up and stashed in a freezer bag till I'm ready to fill the house with soup-y goodness)

| I often use the chicken from the soup, separating it from the bone and then putting the skin and bones into the soup. Comes out delicious.

| When I was little we used to have turkey neck soup quite often, we called it slug soup because the turkey necks looked like big slugs....despite the term it was always yummy!
