Hi Chaya,
I was looking at your helpellen.com site. Not that I am a major amazon.com shopper, but I probably meet the $100/year average (or even more than that) that you estimate. What I want to know is what can you tell us, the frum woman of this site, about where a percentage of the million dollars (or whatever you make) will go? Will 10% go to our local chinuch institutions? 20%? All I see is that you would like to go traveling and have a lot of money and that "what goes around comes around." I don't mean to be harsh here. Imagine if you can get our whole community to buy through amazon because you promise a certain percentage to tzeddakah. Wouldn't that help your goal more?

Hello Tova,

(You live a few blocks away from me, you once PM'ed me, right? We should really meet one day!)

Okay, my plan for helpellen.com is to market it completely outside of the frum community. So far I have done zero promotion beyond posting it on my personal private FB account and sharing with several colleagues via email. I have big plans for it, but I'm too busy to focus on it right now!

So... I didn't write about tzedakah, as that's not my target audience. They probably won't respect the idea that we support men in kollel, how we support yeshivos that may discourage college, or other frum mosdos!

That being said, you did give me a good idea, to write about a tzedakkah that people of all stripes would understand, like the local Ahavas Yisrael that helps the needy in Baltimore. Thanks for that!

My husband and I give ma'aser+ to many local tzedakkos, as well as relatives in dire straights, along with mosdos we attended towards which we feel hakaras hatov. I also always give to Chai Lifeline when they send me a letter - although I never formally used their services B"H. When one of my kids was 2 weeks old, he was hospitalized with meningitis. We sped to the hospital without packing food, leaving my older son with my parents. The next day my husband got meningitis, and my in-laws took him to another hospital. It ended up that I was alone in Long Island Jewish Hospital (my family was in Monsey and didn't visit as they were busy with my older son who didn't feel well) for a day and a half without food beyond a bit of cookies in my pocketbook. A Chai Lifeline volunteer noticed me and asked me if I could use food. She brought me pizza and french fries, and I felt revived, and am eternally grateful to her and the whole organization!

Yes - we live a few blocks from each other - probably a 10 minute walk Very Happy . Too bad we don't have kids the same age or we could make a Shabbos play date (at least I think we don't - looks like your kids are older. Mine are 4.5 and 3).

Oy- I was TOTALLY not questioning about whether you give tzeddakah. Please don't get me wrong. I was just questioning the specific Help Ellen campaign. I clicked searching to see what it would be funding - either yeshiva tuition, someone ill (r"l), if your husband was out of work (ch"v) etc. and could not find that. That was what surprised me. Your premise isn't that people will click on your site to support a specific cause other than doing the "good deed" of helping you earn money. OK, nothing wrong with that I guess, you just have an entreprenueral (sp?) spirit that is outside my realm of grasp.

Tova,

I actually did consider building a a-portion-of-your-purchase-will-go-to-tzedakkah.com site. But the halachos of committing money to tzedakkah are quite strict, and it would be a logistical nightmare for me to constantly track which part of my earnings came to me from Amazon and other merchants from that tzedakkah sites as opposed to the rest of my network of websites.

But you should build a site like that! You're a whiz at tracking numbers! I'll buy through your link! There's more than enough online shoppers to support both of our sites! Very Happy

So the inspiration for this site came from my father's non-Jewish colleague. My father told him to buy on Amazon from my link and I told my father "tell him to Google 'kidkraft dollhouse'. My page raisingsmallsouls.com/kidraft-dollhouse usually comes up #1. (note- google is playing with me right now and bouncing me from positions 1-6.) Tell him to click on any of the links in that chart that go to the dollhouse price on Amazon. Then he can buy whatever he wants on Amazon and I'll get commission."

Now... my father tells his colleagues, "go to my daughter's site, helpellen.com, and she'll get commission when you shop on amazon."

Much simpler, no? 8)

I am also thinking that I'll use the helpellen.com site as a personal blog to share some stories about my grandmother during WWII. (you can see us skyping here: http://helpellen.com/skyping-with-grandma ) I meet with her 2 mornings a week for two hours on Skype: She talks and I type. I want to get feedback if I should pursue publishing her story with a secular publisher or stay with a Jewish publisher.

Anyway, Tova, it is a pretty wacky idea, but so far I like it. If I change my mind one day, I'll take it down!

I totally respect it when you put it that way (ie - difficulty in tracking). Interesting.

This kind of stuff is TOTALLY not for me - for both practical and hashkafic reasons. Practically because I am not a second wage earner in my family - I am the main breadwinner supporting my husband in kollel. So I need a steady paycheck coming in. And I work full time (although half a day from home) so I have no extra time. Hashkafically because I hate commericalism, the advertising industry, enticing people to buy, etc. The culture is just not for me. And putting up blogs or sites with affiliate links or reviews of products or whatever is, essentially, advertising and enticing others to buy. I think this has caused large problems in the nation's consumerism at large and within the frum community. Does that make sense?

Not knocking what you do; just a totally 'nother perspective. We can totally respect each others' opinions on this (and BTW - yes, I'm a CPA and love numbers but I'm TERRIBLE at doing math in my head. My husband on the other hand is a genius at it!).

Whatever, I'll stop the two way dialogue and let others chime in (likely after Shabbos).

If setting up a tedakkah-motivated site is not for you, let me put this offer out there for anyone else:

If you'd like to set up an affiliate site with the goal of donating all the site's profits to charity, I will gladly donate the twenty minutes of my time it will take me to set it up for you!

Tova, is that why you work as an accountant as opposed to working in the selling products industry? As I understand it, there are only 2 ways to make money: Selling a product or performing a service. (Or helping your boss do one of those activities, obviously!) Do you have something against the entire selling products industry, or just the part of the industry that encourages people to buy luxuries that they may not be able to afford? I'd love to see you start a thread about this concept, as I truly do not fullly understand what you meant in the above post. And there are virtually no entrepreneurail, marketing, or business-owner threads on this site... although I'm certain that there are many women here who do own their own businesses!

Hmm - good question. Let me see how I can explain it (and I agree - good topic for another thread. BTW, I would never have posted this in a PAID AD thread; that wouldn't be fair.) I went into the services industry because a) I have no creative talent that I could make something that people would want to buy; b) I don't have the emunah/bitachon/personality to own a store or whatever. I like the security of a set paycheck coming in twice a month (of course our parnassah is completely dependent on H' and I fully am aware of that. I could surely lose my job any moment).

But essentially no. I have no problem with people who own/run clothing stores, bookstores, etc. or even advertise to that effect. I have nothing against buying to fulfill a need (obviously) or even a want that is affordable to you. I think, though, that internet shopping has brought consumerism to a whole new level. Yes, I do shop online occasionally. No sales tax, often free shipping, convenience of my home, often online only sales, reading reviews - all helpful. But it's really all a culture of encouraging us to buy. Amazon saves your recent searches, suggests products, etc. I just see it as a different culture of consumerism than brick and mortar stores (which of course also can get out of hand) and certainly home based businesses.

BTW, now my mind is running overtime with the thoughts that our local schools should set up affiliate link sites and have parents buy to earn percentages for the schools. Of course, the large problem with this is that some of the schools do not encourage internet and this would be hypocritical.

I once brought up this idea of creating an affiliate site for my kids' school (TI), but the person whom I spoke to had a valid point:

If we encourage the parent body to shop at Store A (in this case, through TI's affilite link to Amazon) we may be encouraging the parent body to avoid shopping at local stores that are owned by the parent body, which is just plain rude. (Meaning, encouraging the parents to buy books on Amazon rather than buying books at the local bookstore whose owner sends his kids to TI, etc.)

Someone actually did this for my Shul as you can see here http://sponsors.baishaknesses.com/ but I don't think they did any marketing for it, and nobody seems to know about it! I do the email bulletin for the Shul every week, and this is not something they're actively trying to promote for whatever reason.

Everyone is different. I found the regular paycheck of a job to be limiting. Obviously you can get a nice raise and take on extra work, but people who have regular paychecks won't get a lot more money than they had planned to get based on their jobs.

OTOH, a business can fail.

That's why some of us are employees, and some of us are the entrepreneurs for whom employees work.

I suppose, Tova, you would not want to patronage a market that engages in this sort of upselling?

You're most welcome. I post this kind of thing on my blog all the time, but I felt I really should post that one here as well as so many could benefit from it. It's nice to see this year so many are going to use their free $25 and it has started much stimulating discussion.

A million percent agreed. My earnings are limited. I don't have near the earning potential that you do. I am SO not even a high earner (I earn decently for the school I needed and the hours I currently work).

You know, Jawscience, it's actually your inspiration that made me think of this. American Express sent me a few emails about it, as my business takes Amex cards, but they send me loads of emails, and I generally don't read them thoroughly... however, I noticed this one because I'd seen your post here on imamother! So, thank you! Very Happy

Looking at the bright side- you're far less likely than an entrepreneur to lose a truckload of money and several months of time on an idea that didn't quite pan out the way your thought it would!
