Amazing.
Uneducated, unintelligent and non-creative are three different things.
BTW this device is similar to what the ancients had: a gem or something similar that was placed in the roof of boats etc. to bring light inside. I think it is discussed in terms of Noah's Ark. _________________ But then again, I'm a dragon.

In what looks like a poor slum in the Phillipines, the houses are so crowded together that very little sunlight comes into the little shacks through windows or doors.
The video clip showed how one man made solar "lightbulbs" -- he filled empty plastic soda bottles with water and bleach and put them into roof shingles (with sealant around it to prevent leaks). I'm not sure of the science behind it, but the sunlight shining through the bottle from the part sticking out through the roof carried down and seemed to concentrate into a bright glow in the part of the bottle that was inside the house.
At the end, they said they've already helped hundreds of people with this invention, and were taking donations to help more.

My FIL has one of those stones from an old sailboat. Cool to upcycle what would be trash into such a useful thing. _________________ mommy to 2 girls, 1 boy

I totally don't get it scientifically. This is only during the day, right? At night, it's still dark inside.
Yes, it's only for the day, but their houses were dark even during the day because they were crammed together so tightly as to not allow sunlight to come in through windows or doors.

No, I get that. I guess the bleach defuses the light to make it glow?

I think the drop of bleach, along with the use of filtered water, is just to keep algae and other gunk from growing in the bottle and clouding it up. The water itself is what diffuses the light.

Glass crystals were used on the decks of ships for this purpose.
In Belgium in the 1600s, lace makers used candles with two convex pieces of glass put together to form a holder. The glass was placed in front of the candle and concentrated the light. I also saw a book light which looked like an oversized metal band aid box with holes punched out. It was worn around the neck and a candle was inserted inside. I saw these items on display in Monroe. Fascinating to me.

in the comments on youtube, they mention that the idea was developed at MIT and someone taught him what to do - brilliant idea, either way! _________________ The results of our actions are not up to us or even necessarily a direct consequence of them. It's so amazing what we take for granted. How wonderful that something as simple as a plastic bottle could improve the quality of people's lives so much! _________________ See that blue button down there? The one with the WWW on it? CLICK IT!
