tomorrow in the morning I am taking an elderly lady out to do her errands and in this area on the same road as all the places she is going (charity shop, doctors etc) there is this lovely bakery - would it be rude if after we've fone her errands I asked if we could buy some cakes? obviously I will pay.

I think it is a nice idea and she may also feel good that as well as her "needing" you to take her out, you also got to get something you want from the trip!

I don't see why it would be rude at all.

Not rude at all. You're so nice for taking her in the first place.

it's far from rude, it's actually very sweet. but if she is diabetic or doesn't want any cake herself, be respectful and buy for yourself only. also make sure you suggest it once you've done all her errands first. kol hakavod
