I had a florist (is that what the person who works in a flower store is called?) over Friday night. He gave me some tips on how to keep flowers alive longer. I thought I'd share them.

When you buy the flowers, cut the stems about 1 1/2 inches, fill vase with water and add a drop of soda. He says that flowers love a bit of sugar and they do better that way. You can do this again a few days later when you put fresh water into the vase. Also, make sure the vase is very very clean because otherwise it grows bacteria which kills the next batch of flowers right away.

He says it's not a guarantee but the flowers should do better like this.

Good Luck.

I was also told to remove any leaves from the part of the stem that will be in the water... something to do with producing bacteria.

All of the above, and also, once you´ve cut the stem on a slant, cut a slit into the stem about half an inch up. Helps the flower absorb the water.

not all flowers will appreciate being slit! so ask your florist before you do so!

most flowers are best kept out of sunlight in a room that is not warm, they are also best in a clean vase with the special sachet of flower food that most good florists should supply you with.

tulips and gerberas are best in freezing cold water and do not fare well at all in direct sunlight.

no leaves should be in the water itself only stems, and water should be changed every couple of days. they should also not be stored or kept too close to fruits as they give off something which kills the flowers quicker.
