My daughter just began standing on her own and walking while holding on with one hand. When does she need good beginner shoes? Now or when she can really walk on her own?

I haven't had a just-starting-to-walk toddler in over a decade, but in those days the thing to do would be to wait until she's really walking. It's supposed to be better for foot development. I used non-slip slippers (the kind with elastic around the ankle) to protect her feet from yucky floors until then.

I was just talking about this with someone who saw a top pediatric orthopedist and asked him this question, and he said the longer they walk barefoot the better.

Yup. Walking barefoot is best because it helps to strengthen the muscles on the bottoms of their feet - they learn to grip the floor.

They say shoes after they're totally walking on their own. I keep them barefoot at home and in robeez outside if they're going to want to go down.

my MIL is a podiatrist- she says wait until they walk confidently on their own for about two weeks. then they can get shoes for when they are outside. they don't need them for indoors, but they can wear them indoors also. she highly recommends stride rite shoes- the high top ones especially for the first few pairs.
