I Want to get now a heavy plastic tablecloth. not the cheap disposable ones but these look nice and you just wipe them down. I love them because it adds a shine and it protects my t/cloth from stains.

I get mine at Gitta Steinmetz in Boro Park. They come in all sizes. Beautifully made with white stitching all around. I keep it for a year, and then change before Pesach.

Usually, for the type of people who ask about such things, plastic = bad.

We don't use plastic; we use microfiber or the very inexpensive synthetic tablecloths. We use heavier, harder-to-launder tablecloths for yom tov. If they stain, I use stain-remover. They are not always white tablecloths, though (which is another non-no, shidduch-wise).

I guess my kids are out of luck, but at least I won't get stuffy mechutanim.

Well, I only have a son. And we don't shidduch date. But if we did, I'd be looking for someone who said "actually, our fine china is Dixie, and we eat on Bozo the Clown tablecloths from the party store" Because then they could never complain about anything my daughter did.

LOL...our kids can marry. I don't care about tablecloths or china. What I care about is how your child will treat my child and family and his/her sons and daughters. Will s/he offer to help when s/he is a "guest"? Will s/he feel comfortable going to the fridge and getting a snack? Will s/he bring me white chocolate (that's the important one)?

A son! Lucky you! You only have to pay 30%!!! And since I am sure your son is a top boy, you can ask a LOT for him. Just make sure he dates girls from Shtark MO circles. I'm sure your son will be thrilled not to have to pay rent since his in laws will buy him a brand new apartment. the girl doesn't matter...only the money.

And you can keep your Bozo the Clown tablecloths pristine longer because half the family will often be eating pb&j in the kitchen.

My shabbos table is my pride and glory. We use real tablecloths (not very expensive, washable), with real cloth napkins, gorgeous china, silver flatware, and fancy glasses. All of which I got from my mother as she never used it and I thought it was a waste to let it sit around unused. No plastic tablecloth then.

During the week, you bet I use disposables! Galore! After every meal I roll it off, spills and all, straight into the garbage. And then I wipe the table underneath that got wet from all the holes the kids punched in the plastic with their forks Rolling Eyes

Same here!

Though I will admit that I used a heavy plastic cover back in the days when I had five kids under the age of 6. I still use a heavy plastic cover over Pesach because I simply don't have that many tablecloths.

The rest of the time, though, I don't find this to be such a problem. Over the years, I've found some great tablecloths that, while not having that chemical sheen of the stain-resistant ones, still manage to come out of the washer & dryer looking great. And when they're worn out, they get turned into placemats. Since I need a 70" x 144" cloth, I'm always on the lookout for good tablecloths at reasonable prices.
