I know it's a growing community, B'H and many people who cant' afford to buy in Boro Park or Flatbush are moving there.
Here are my questions. Do you think the community is there to stay? Is it possible to survive there without a car (I know there is B82 on one end and B2 and B100 - on another, but in terms of supermarkets, pharmacies, cleaners, whatever else is needed? Is it safe to walk there when it's dark, which could be pretty early in winter (asking because it's largely residential area and to me, it looks like everyone is driving, as opposed to, say BP or Ave J/M/Kings Highway where plenty of people walking around)?
thank you in advance!

Where do I begin? I have lived here for almost 8 years. You pretty much need a car here. There are different parts to marine park as there are different areas of Flatbush and BP. At night, for the most part people walk safely- but where exactly are people going at night? They usually drive. There are 2 supermarkets and Kosher Palace on U and East 27th is another one people go to.
Weve got tons of cleaners, many shuls, alot of manicure places, depending on how far away you are Pizza Nosh on Nostrand and Kings Highway, and many different schools and yeshivas are represented. There are people of all different levels of frumkeit as well. Life is a bit more simpler, for the most part, there are no contests for who dresses their kids fancier. though there are exceptions. Every block here varies. Some are great, some have some "sonei Yisrael". You have to ask around first. there is no alternate side street parking here for the most part. Alot of people have dogs. There are other busses, B9 which is on Flatbush Ave and P, Q, R etc, and another line that goes up avenue R starting on East 36th Street.
Feel free to ask away.

thanks a lot for the reply (1 after 41 views, not bad, right? )
I'm looking into the area between kings highway and fillmore and between east 33 and flatbush. our kids are in schools already, so that's not an issue and actually, many (hm, probably most) of the classmates do live in Marine Park. I actually heard that people in the area are fancy young couples, but that doesn't worry me as, as you said, it probably depends on the block and we are OK with where we stand financially and hashkafically.
by walking at night I mean, let's say, coming back from work in the winter at 6-7pm and going to/from shul/friends on Friday nights or just running to the grocery to get milk when it's dark already. is it safe? do people walk during the week at all or it's just houses and cars? (you probably know what I'm comparing it to - BP and Flatbush, so know where I'm coming from)
I know there is an Associated supermarket on Quentin Road and east 33 (or somewhere around that) and a kosher supermarket right there. are the prices good in that store or it's expensive (being that there is not much competition going on)? I also saw a small grocery around Ave N and east 34-35, but can't imagine the prices are cheap there, but good to know, convenience wise.
and the million dollar question - do you think the community is there to stay? I see you moved in when it was probably starting out, so what do you think? if we are to buy, it would be for a very long term.

People walk home from work, school etc with no problem. As I said people are always walking dogs at all hours. I personally would not walk alone after 9 but thats just me. Friday night, people do walk around as alot of people eat their meals by friends especially on the short friday nights if their kids can walk. There is an Eruv, but with the exception of the very MO and Chassidish, the r
Most frum people dont shop by associated, except when they have good specials. Alot of people do a whole weeks worth of shopping from the grocery store right there. In the summer it is tough because they are severely understocked. I personally dont buy meat/chicken from them when its warm as I prefer on site packaging of meat as it spoils faster.
Then your million dollar question. I dont know you, your age, your kids ages, your hashkafos or levels of frumkeit. that would make a really big difference how this question gets answered. I also dont know where you are coming from...If perhaps you feel comfortable revealing from what walks of life you are perhaps I could be more helpful...

Theres only one on quentin. And keep in mind that all these stores you mentioned are on one block, at most two. so if you dont have a car and you dont live right there, they are not easily accesible. Pizza and Fleishig takeout delivers. Bagel store doesnt. But the grocery stores do.

thanks, amother, you've been very helpful.
about my million $ question - we are modern yeshivish/MO machmir, so I'm pretty sure we will fit in. not wealthy at all and not going to keep up with Cohens. we are in our 30s and our kids are going into 1 and 2 grades.
(just curious - how does it help to answer if the community is there to stay? do you mean that it might become more modern or more yeshivish?)
also, thank you, mom2zahava. I do think that many of the places you mentioned is in the vicinity of nostrand and Ave M, which could be quite a walk from, say, fillmore and east 36.
oh, another question - is it safe to live near the park, like east 35-37 and fillmore/ave S?
amother - do you live in this vicinity or the other way of the park?

At this point, Im going to give myself away by posting here and people will figure me out... I prefer to take this elsewhere..I obviously cant tell you where I live for all to see. I hope you understand..
I will tell you that you and your kids are a good age. There are tons of kids those ages so you will fit right in. As far as modern vs. Yeshivish..I aint going there over here....

Original amother here...There are tons of amothers. Some of us are in the country... some of us are away... Some of us are here.... and I wont tell you where I am!! And most of us normal ones are getting ready for Shabbos!!
BTW To tell you the truth, near Marine Park can be a little tough. When the Junior high starts and when the kids get out... All H--- sort of breaks loose. These kids are loud and rowdy and it can get a bit overwhelming as there are probably 1000 of them. Also at night, the park is not the best . there are other teens who hang out there LATE at night. Once you are on East 35th though, you are past that whole mess .

why's everyone anonymous?
I live in marine park, have been here for nearly four years. we have a car, but I don't have a driver's license. while it would be easier to drive, I get around fine. buy rite is the store mentioned earlier on quentin, I believe. their prices are fine, for the most part. they often have sales on certain cuts of chicken/meat and those are very nice prices. I shop elsewhere in the summer, they scale down a lot due to people being away.
cleaners are here in abundance. I can't really think of anything that's not available.
walkability: depends on where you live. I wouldn't want to walk home from bus/train on flatbush ave at night. I'm not that close to flatbush ave, so that hasn't been a problem for me.
lots of shuls, mikvah in community, etc. etc.
yes, I think the "community" is here to stay. the community varies from shul to shul, it really is like flatbush in a certain sense. I can't see all the jews packing up and moving anytime soon.

| I recently moved here too. I have not utilized any of the shopping on this side yet except for the pizza and bagels which my kids are very happy about. I myself grew up in a pretty tough neighborhood and I"m not exactly thrilled walking these streets late at night, it seems more deserted than my former neighborhood. I like the fact even though I drive, Im pretty close to the b100 and b82 and there are express buses to manhattan. My kids have more friends on this side of town and I consider myself MO machmir but there are all different types here. My kids are going into 2nd and third and they are pretty happy here. They love the park. I just bought a bike for myself and haven't been on one in yrs.
