| |
I cover my hair mostly with hats. I occasionally use a sheytel (headband fall or full sheytel) but my go-to covering is hats.
I have been wearing scarves more frequently recently and like the look, but have 2 issues that I'd like some suggestions for dealing with:
1. I have short wisps near my ears that slip out of the tichel (too short to tuck in) and frizz up immediately (I have curly hair). Any suggestions for dealing with this?
2. I hate that the tichel slips back. I use all-cotton scarves (not slipperly silk) but still wind up pulling it forward as it slips back later in the day, or often retying it. Any recommendations for how to prevent the slippage?
Thanks!

For slippage, I use two pins on each side.
For small hair, some women shave it. _________________

That's payos hair. In Lub we're makpid to cover it but then again, married women only wear full sheitlach out of the house, so it's not a problem.

Try a plain cotton snood under your tichel.
Also, you could try a wigrip band. I haven't tried it with a tichel for all-day wear, but a trial in the house went well. (I loooove my wigrip with my sheital!)

I put a bobbypin on either side of my head to hold my tichel in place. It makes a huge difference. _________________

AFAIK those wisps are not an issue in terms of halacha. If they bother you for other reasons, it might help if you wet your hair (or just those areas) before putting the tichel on.
Ya they slip back, no advice on that, it happens to all of us _________________ "But it's no use going back to yesterday, I was a different person then"- Alice in Wonderland

I would never shave it! The result would be gross stubble - I don't need a beard, thankyouverymuch.
And FYI - the hair I am referring to is not my sideburns, but from slightly higher-up too - its frizzy & short, doesn't seem to grow longer.
And I am comfortable showing less than a tefach. I just don't like the frizz. and the slipping back tichel - when I put it on in the AM, I want it to stay put, like a hat would. I also don't want to give myself a headache from tying it too tight (that doesn't seem to help anyway...)

| I wear a wide cotton headband underneath which I sometimes secure with bobby pins even. then I put the tichel over it, but no pins showing on the outside. (I don't like that)

Can you use some kind of gel to slick the wisps back and keep them there? If there isn't much, you can even use clear mascara- the wand will help keep it where you want.
Unfortunately, tichels do need to be adjusted throughout the day. I have ways of doing it that don't require privacy, so play around at home and practice. I make a point of redoing it every time I use the bathroom if I'm out of the house.

I second wearing a cotton headband under your tichul. I wear a wide band (about 5" wide) under a slinky bandanna, and it really helps.
As far as the curly wisps, maybe mousse or a frizz-control product will do the trick.

| You can get a wig grip from your local sheitel macher or online for about $20. It keeps the curlies tucked in and keeps sheitels, snoods, tichels, hats, etc from slipping. I wear mine every day! It works much better than plain cotton headbands or even the silicon goodie ones.

I recommend buying a wig grip. It will keep those small hairs under the tichel and the tichel will stay in place all day too

Great ideas, everyone! Thank you so much!
I also have this problem, that my tichel slips back--I buy the pretied ones since I like the way they look on me, but they stretch out after 1-2 washes! I will try the bobby pins, and if not, the headband.
I assume you all mean the cotton elastic hairbands? The ones that are like an elastic band around the head?

The only way I get them to stay put is to tie the tichel tight and to use the kind with lurex - the fabric seems to have extra "give" in it, if that makes sense. The heavy cotton scarves weigh down in the back and cause extra slipping. I also overcompensate by making it a little too far over my hairline b/c as I tie the tichel it ends up further back from the tugging when tying. Wetting my hair before I put it in a hair elastic also helps. _________________ I'm not the popular Mama Bear. I'm "the other one."

No, I do not mean the elastic headbands. I am talking about the velcro headbands that were made specifically for this purpose. See the link.

I wear a headband under my tichels, but not just a regular cotton one; the kind I like best has a sort of waffle-y texture to it, so it provides some grip without being too thick. I find them at rite-aid every now and then, and buy extras because they do stretch out after a year or two of constant use! I even gave some as shower gifts to two friends recently.
The velvet wig headbands are ok, and I like it under a sheitel, but when I tried it with a tichel, I found that I prefer the waffle ones. they're a common brand like goody or scunci or something like that.
