Please help me figure out how to organize my paperwork

I live in a very small apartment. I have never bought a file cabinet cause I didn't know where I'd put it. Now my paperwork is all over the place and extremely disorganized. I would like to buy a file cabinet now just because I feel like I don't have a choice and I'll just put it into my dining room/living room/toy room/laundry room (meaning my everything room). I went onto Amazon.com and searched for file cabinets and they're quite expensive. What do you do to organize your paper work? What advice can you give me to organize mine? I would really appreciate it if you can help me.

you can buy portable file boxes that are relatively inexpensive, yet very helpful. Office Max, Staples etc. have full file cabinets for around $100 or less.

Look on craigslist - people and businesses are always selling therm second hand.

You can buy milk-crate type file holders if your papers aren't too many.

Or you can buy a scanner and backup drive and scan everything.

What about paperwork like social security, passports, important school papers, tax returns, birth certificates and other stuff besides for bills?

A water/fireproof box is important for your important documents otherwise any filing system can work.
You can chose to either do it by month or by item (gas, electric, repairs etc).
