Wed like to go to a beach that has a parking lot, as street parking is probably impossible. With the exception of Manhattan Beach, and Riese Beach in Far Rockaway, are there any others within an hour of Brooklyn?

Can you please be a bit more specific with a name /or location or is it "staten Island beach"? Do they have a huge Parking lot enough to accomodate a Sunday Crowd?

Take the Verazzano Bridge, LOWER level, & keep to the right. The first exit is Bay Street right after the tolls..take the next one Fr. Capadano (sp) Blvd. Follow signs to SIU Hospital. You'll see the beach on your left & right after the beach club is the playground. Take the next turning into the parking lot.

Have fun & watch out for currents!!

I think that during the summer, Atlantic beach only allows private parking. Long Beach has street parking so it may be hard to find a spot. Jones Beach (which is a little further) has huge parking lots.

There's also Lido Beach, which is next to Long Beach I think. There is street parking, but it's not too bad.

Thank You all!

So it is Jones Beach vs. Staten Island Beach-

Which one should have less crowds, you think?

Long Beach also has a high entry fee for non-residents to keep day-trippers from completely clogging the place (since you can walk to the beach from the train station). Part of Lido is Nassau Beach Park which is also restricted to non-residents (I only went as a resident, I don't know price or if you're allowed in at all). Part is just open beach in front of apartment buildings and you can walk right on, but there are no lifeguards and I would never, ever swim off the south shore without one. Parking in Lido can be iffy.

(OK - without a Nassau County leisure pass, Nassau Beach/Nickerson Park is $30. If you know anyone from Nassau with a pass, it's a good beach though, much quieter than Jones Beach.)

Jones Beach is always crowded on nice summer days. Field 6 (no need to cross under, right by the East Bathhouse) fills up early, I've seen it done by 9--but as long as I could do the walk, I might consider parking in one of the less crowded fields anyway so I didn't wind up on a packed section of beach. The Zachs Bay side is good to take little kids swimming though the beach on the ocean side is nicer.

Staten Island is probably the less crowded of the two but the water won't be as clean if you're planning to go in.

I haven't been there in about ten years, but IIRC, the beach Bubby is referring to is probably "South Beach." The next beach to the south is called "Midland Beach." Nice family beaches with lots of parking. A local person when I was there suggested that the water was not so clean for swimming, but I don't know how it is now.

Have fun!

Why do you have to leave Brooklyn? You can go to Brighton Beach. There is no parking lot but there is plenty of street parking by Surf Avenue and the west 20's.
