I have to give my newborn baby soy formula, and I am considering using a grocery store generic brand. It is "compared to Isomil." I just feel a little weird about using a generic formula just to save a few bucks. Are generic brands the same as the brand they are "compared" to? My husband said they are all the same.

WWYD?

they are all under the same health standard, if that's what you're asking. I've heard of kids who are sensitive to all but the walmart brand.

btw, I had some experience with a "sensitive" baby. he started on similac, but seemed to be sensitive to milk-based formula, so I put him on isomil. that helped somewhat, but I ended up trying enfamil on him. he was so much better on enfamil. since then I found out that similac brand is known to be harder to digest. unless you have reason to think the baby is allergic to milk, I'd consider trying a different brand of milk-based formula. especially if you're looking to save money. also, you can go on the websites of most major formula brands and sign up for checks. they will send you a couple of checks a month to be used towards formula. they can be very helpful.

I personally like using name brand but it is purely convenience--if I need to, I can buy that anywhere.

If you are on standard milk or soy formula generic is fine. A lot of the stuff that Enfamil and Similac claim to add hasn't been proven to be better.

For specialty formulas, you need to stick to whatever baby tolerates/what your ped recommends.

we used generic formula and were very pleased. it costs a fraction of brand-name and worked just as well. I found target brand to be the cheapest.

I have never used formula, but it is HIGHLY governmentally regulated. They all have exactly the same vitamins, etc. on.

Thanks everyone, OP here. You are all making me feel better. I looked up the Target brand and I see online it IS very cheap by the 6-pack carton...I wonder if it's that cheap in the stores individually? The 25 oz can costs about $13.65 a piece (!!!!) in the 6-pack.

I buy the target brand and I've been very happy with it. I think the prices are the same in store and online.

The money you save is so much that if you're going on a long trip and traveling by plane it would be worth paying to check a bag with formula. But I don't think most people go away for that long that they can't easily bring a can or 2 of formula with them. And most babies don't have a negative reaction to switching between different brands of the same type of formula if for some reason you forget to bring.

OP-you said you can't use formula that's OUD? all the formulas are OUD unless you buy the expensive chalav yisrael ones. even the soy ones are all OUD, as far as I know. (can anyone verify this?)
