Oy. Honestly though, I think he came off as more of the aloof, immature, mildly obnoxious college-age/frat guy than anything else. If he were a few years older, he would've handled it differently. A good kid who just didn't think.
The other case was a little bit different--they were older and presented themselves in a different way....

This show is on every night. People see all kinds of shtuss. I don't think anyone is going to go from a Peaceloving Brotherhood of Man idealist to a hard-core anti-Semitie over it. I'm not losing sleep. _________________ Say, Think or Do One Thing Now to Bring Moshiach!

Remember the sheitl case, and how vehement I was that they committed a chilul Hashem and were trying to pull a fast one over the Court?
OK. Ezra's not so bad. He may have even gotten a little bit shafted.
First, did Ezra knowingly leave the scene of the accident? Yeah. He's a kid. He was scared. He was probably trying to get somewhere that he could call someone to tell him what to do. No excuse, but context.
No way that was his pickup. Ezra doesn't look like a pickup kind of a guy. Which is why he was scared. Why he didn't want to call the insurance company. And why the insurance company wasn't coming into small claims court. The truck most likely belonged to a small business, whcih had a very high deductible. And the $2000 she sued for was under the deductible. Since there was no circumstance in which the insurance ocmpany could be liable, there was no obligation to defend. Judge blew that one.
And the woman's story about the flying picnic table and going back and forth in lanes, deciding where it was best to hit, then chasing him and having cars let her pass because they saw what happened ... pure fantasy. You have to wonder if she and Ezra cooked that one up together, since the show was likely to pay the damages.
Now, segue to the Judge's story about her chair. Don't believe that one either. First, who would bring a chair into their house after it was used by hobos. HOBOS. I'd tell them to enjoy it in good healthy. Esp since the husband had the finances to GIVE THE HOBO MORE THAN HE PAID FOR THE CHAIR. Why not go back to the store and get another one in that case?
Now, let's get down to dollars and cents. Because that's where Ezra had a real point. She was driving a 14 year-old car. Now, no one -- no one -- fixing that car is goig to put a new headlight, or anything new, on it, unless an insurance company is footing the bill. They're going to the junkyard and getting parts at a fraction of the cost. That's what they auto body guy Ezra spoke to must have told him, and given him a much lower price to repair the car. (Add into this that most people don't comprehend how expensive auto body work really is, so I find it entirely believable that Ezra was shocked at the bill.) Now. you're going to say that she was entitled not to go that route, and you're right. But *I* think that she did. How long did it take to get onto the show. Four months? Six? It wasn't a week, that's for sure. AND SHE DIDN'T HAVE A SINGLE RECEIPT FOR REPAIRS. Was her cousin driving with a busted headlight and a bumper falling off all that time? Of course not. It was fixed using the junkyard parts I mentioned. That's why she had a printout of what Acura wanted for a headligh, but not a receipt for one. The judge should have asked, just like she asked sheitl lady.
Okay, off my soapbox.
ETA -- how many years has The People's Court been on the air? I wonder how many times the defendant has freely admitted that he had done wrong and was responsible, but simply questioned the extent of damages. I was actualy a little impressed. _________________ Life is scary. Wear pantyhose.

Barbara, you're a genius. I didn't buy the bubbemeiseh about the flying picnic table changing lanes, either, but I didn't pick up on the fact that the plaintiff had no receipts. I thought it was beyond weird that the judge starts telling this whole nonsequitur story about when she was pregnant with her first kid--who the heck cares?--just to show us--well, I'm not sure what it was supposed to show us! The whole episode was bizarre.

For those not in the know - when a case is brought to peoples court the defendant doesn't have to pay the judgement. Peoples court pays the judgement - that is why at the end Ezra answered that the ins. said they don't have to do anything. He didn't understand what the judge wanted from him. (bewildered)
btw - that's one of the reasons why the shaitel case was also tried in peoples court - they figured that when the defendant is found guilty the money won't be coming out of their pocket - the court will pay for it.

If the car belonged to a small business and Ezra wasn't covered by that small business (if it employs him), than the small business belongs in court, and if Ezra isn't covered he belongs in court for driving without insurance (what if he had killed someone?). Sure he is a kid and scared, but those two things do not make you less liable.
As for the damages-- that is what bodywork costs. Sure its expensive, sure its an old car, sure its half the blue book value of the entire car (sheesh!) but he caused the damage, admitted in court under oath to causing the damage, and consequently is responsible. I'm with the group that says PLEASE take off your kippah and call yourself Fred!
Oh, and you're entitled to the costs of the damages EVEN IF you go the junkyard route. Even if you then scrap your car, you are entitled to the FULL cost of the damages as long as its within a legally defined "reasonable" which means just BECAUSE you can get it cheaper doesn't mean you are REQUIRED to get it cheaper.
