| Would you give your 1.5 year old pasta with marinara sauce? My toddler has recently become so picky with what she eats and the only way she'll eat pasta is with marinara sauce. I know its loaded with salt so I try to not put too much sauce but its either the marinara sauce or she won't eat the pasta at all...and there's not too many other carbs she eats (aside from my homebaked challah). What's your opinon?

| maybe not for breakfast lunch and dinner but as long as nutritional needs are met with good proteins and vegetables I don't think its such a big deal.

| Why don't you make your own marinara? This way, you can control the salt and skip all the additives and stuff they put in, and it's a good opportunity to sneak in some veggies and herbs, like fresh tomatoes, onions, garlic, zucchinni, parsley, etc. If she insists on the store-bought kind that she's used to, just pour your healthy version into the same jar. At this age, you can possibly even substitute the pasta for whole-wheat pasta.

| I give it. My DS loves vodka sauce. It's got a lot of fat and at their age they need it. But I would say that I try to make the sauce myself or add carrot puree to the sauce. I'm big on hiding vegetables in food he likes. There are a couple cookbooks about that. One is by Jessica Seinfeld, I have the other one.

| If either of you can give me a good recipe for homemade marinara sauce, I'd really appreciate it. And what are some ways you can sneak other foods in? I really need ideas...

I make sauce with chopped or pureed tomatoes (usually Pomi brand, prefer not to use canned tomatoes when possible), olive oil, garlic, sometimes a touch balsamic vinegar, salt, and pepper. Add basil or oregano if you like, to make it more like vodka sauce you can add cream or whole milk. Then you can sneak in the pureed carrots (not too much).
One great way to hide veggies is to puree cauliflower and zucchini together. I didn't think it would work but it totally does because once the cauliflower has been steamed and pureed, it is practically tasteless as an ingredient. I make my DS quiche all the time and put a mix of cauliflower and zucchini puree in it and he can't taste it at all. (about 1/3 cup at a time) this is from my sneaky veggie cookbook. The zucchini should be raw and peeled. She calls it "white puree." I think it's about one head cauliflower and two large zucchini together. Then freeze what's left in 1/3 cup portions to add to recipes. It works in a lot of stuff you would normally cook.

Would she eat whole wheat pasta? It's got a lot of protein as well as fiber. Ronzoni makes veggie-infused pasta as well. its pricy, but if you only use it for DD, it could be a way to get extra veg in her. if you check the website and sign up for newsletters, you can get coupons, which help.
tomato season is coming up; if you can, hit farmers markets for amazing fresh tomatoes; if you get into it, you can put up your own jars of sauce to use the whole year.
she doesn't eat bagels or english muffins or anything? can you make her a special batch of small challah rolls and freeze them for sandwiches?

actually she does eat whole wheat pasta, its the only kind I buy so the only times she's ever had pasta in her life, its been whole wheat. as far as the veggies, believe it or not, she eats cucumbers and tomatoes with no problem. she loves them. im more concerned about the fact that she just stopped eating meat, chicken, eggs, yogurt cold turkey. she was eating those a lot and those were her major sources of fat and iron and now im scrambling to find things she'll eat to replace that. but I did try to sneak chicken in her pasta with marinara sauce the other day and it worked b"h! so now I just have to either make my own marinara sauce or find one that I dont feel so bad giving to her

I'd be worried about her protein intake at least as much as fat and iron. you can get vitamins with added iron. does she eat peanut butter or almond butter? hummus? beans? avocado and nuts are good for fat.

well she drinks whole milk and eats cheese so I know she's getting protein from that. she won't eat any of the above that you mentioned. I got her iron levels checked and b"h they are good so at least that's out of the way...

| Whole milk has tons of fat so I wouldn't be so worried about the lack of other fat in her diet but of course you could check with her pediatrician to double check. I give my toddler pasta with marinara sauce, that's usually her lunch during the week.

As my dad would say, but maybe it's cultural, a kid who is very picky isn't very hungry. _________________

As a pediatric therapist, I work with children with a wide range of sensory and developmental delays/disorders. In my experience, your statement is absolutely incorrect. I have encountered children who have an extremely limited repertoire of tolerated foods. These kids will literally starve themselves rather than eat something intolerable to them. Nothing in the world will make them willing to eat those foods.

| Survival instinct is very strong in children, actually more than in adults.

So you are advocating starving a child to the point that survival instinct will kick in and make her eat those green beans?

OP here- the bolded part scares me so much. My child is b"h not sensory or developmentally delayed but will she starve herself if there is food she doesn't want to eat??
