My kiddies graduated from mitzvah notes a while back, but I wrote neither "dear morah/rebbe" nor signed them, nor embellished with commentary such as "what a mitzvah boy!". Just the facts, ma'am: "Nissim helped the baby climb out of the cesspool and cleaned him off all by himself" or whatever.

I sent them in as often as I remembered. Not every day, because I wanted them to be something special and not become routine, like taking vitamins or something--but some days I'd send in more than one.

So funny! This morning when I was writing my daughter's mitzva note, I was wondering the same thing. Also, What do you write it on?

I wrote it on a half torn store receipt. I figured it was better than nothing. I didn't write Dear morah. I think I did last time. I think it's cute whenthe parent signs something like 'mommy loves child so much. child is such a mitzva girl.'

I should really do it ahaead of time and not in the hallway.

I send Mitzvah notes about twice a week. I write Dear Morah ___ (chany, sury, etc.) and usually sign "Esty's Mommy" or whatever the child's name is. My daughter who started school this year, though, has a rather long name, so I'm lazy to sign it my usual way. For her I sometimes write Mommy ___ (green, schwartz, etc.).

I also draw a smiley face (nothing fancy, with regular pen) at the bottom of my notes. The child obviously cannot read what it says, and this allows them to "read" something (happy face = Mommy is proud of me/I did something good, etc.) when they glance at it. Just a little thing I like to do...

I'm always thinking if the teachers aren't bored of my notes
DD finished her breakfast today mommy is so proud.

or DD shared with her little sister the toys mommy is so proud

I just realized that I always finish of as mommy or totty and mommy are so proud of our _______

does that make sence?

Funny you asked. I was just thinking that I should buy a pad of paper (either lined or simple stationery, but smaller than 8x11) to be use specifically for mitzvah notes. Like that I won't be hunting around for a piece of paper and I won't be sending half-torn ones... These things don't cost much and would make a difference - for the child and teacher. (I doubt the teacher appreciates reading the mitzvah note from the back of a store receipt Laughing )

I also like to add one such short phrase somewhere in the note to make it more exciting for the child. I may start off with "Esty is a mitzvah girl. Yesterday...." Or if she did something special, I will end with "Tatty and Mommy are so proud of Esty!"

I write the mitzva notes on colored paper. my dd likes to pick out which color. Her teacher requested everyone to write one each day.

Busymom, I start off the mitzva notes the same & end the same as urs Smile

smiley face is a good idea- thanks!

in the beginning I signed it mommy (schwartz), but then I thought it looked like hey, maybe she has 2 mommies & I have to specify which one so that started to creep me out Smile then I did mrs. schwartz- which ook sway too official. Now I sign mommy or leave it blank, but I guess Esti's mommy is a good idea too- thanks!!!!

I don't sign my name or write "Dear Morah." And like Chen, I just write the facts (but I sure hope I'll never have to write the mitzva note that Chen did Wink).
My dd's morah said to send one everyday, so I do. I would feel bad if everyone else has a mitzvah note and dd doesn't. Dd once left her lunch (with the mitzva note) in someone's car. So the Morah called our house and asked what the mitzvah note said!
I cut up different colors of construction paper into small note-size pieces (maybe 3" x 4") and some mornings dd gets to choose which color she wants.

I also write 'we are so proud of our big girl...' or something to this effect. I don't write dear morah, unless I am writing a note for the morah. I don't either sign it off, but I do make a smiley... sometimes my dd asks me to add to the smiley hair, hands or feet... so we become creative at times.

I have a special pad of paper that is my mitzvah note paper. this way I don't have to look for a piece of paper all over the house.

I also like to prepare their briefcase (2 dds) in advance (night before) with a penny, mitzvah note, and whatever else they need.

also I only send in a note twice a week... I heard from a teacher that in a class of 20-25 children, if they bring a note every day it becomes a bit out of hand... so a mitzvah note is something really special...

Typical mitzvah note last year:

"Eliana got up, picked out her clothes, got dressed and even put on her shoes without any help at all from mommy!"

She got recognition for her responsibility and independence - and I got a neat way of explaining why my child was dressed in crazy-looking clothes that totally clashed, with her shoes on the wrong feet.

First child: Mother cuts construction paper into shapes appropriate to the mitzvoh, e.g. ice cream cone for making a brocho on same, challos for helping make them.

Second child: Mother uses colorful notepaper or post-it notes; color may or may not be connected to the mitzvoh.

Third child: Mother uses sheet of paper ripped from older child's looseleaf.

Fourth and subsequent children: Mother uses back of shopping list, store receipt, grocery bag, TP, or whatever else is around.

If I don't write one every day, DD makes sure to tell me off when she gets home. I bought a 2.5" square block pad of paper in old navy last year for $5, There must be 100 sheets on it.

I don't sign. They know it's from me or DH & when I used to teach I never read the signature unless it was someone other than a parent who wrote it.

I ususally include Keep up the good work, we are so proud of you.

and why not? if you can be chayov for something you did while you were asleep, why can't you be rewarded for something you didn't do?
