Mastik Teimani (the Hebrew term for mastic gum) is produced from the sap of the mastic tree, and in Israel is recognized by the Ministry of Health as a food supplement. Many religious women use mastik teimani to shorten periods, to ease cramping, to prevent spotting, and to prevent miscarriages. Despite the widespread reputation among women, there isn't a single scientific study in the medical literature that has examined the effects of mastik teimani on the female reproductive system.
Bikur Holim hospital in Jerusalem is doing the first study of its kind to test the efficacy of mastik teimani in shortening the duration of women's periods. Additional outcomes include the effect on cramping and reduction of spotting during the month.
