Hi,
I just graduated from OT school and am going to start looking for a job soon. For all OTs out there, just a few questions: I know that I definately want to work with kids, but dont know exactly what type of setting. As much as I wish money wasnt an issue, its getting pretty tight and I really want to make as much money per hour as I can. What is the most I can expect to be paid per session? What type of setting pays the best? Also, I am a little confused about salary work vs. per diem/contract work. What is the advantage of one over another? Pros and cons about working in different types of settings (schools, hospitals, sensory gyms, agencies, etc) would be helpful as well. Basically, any information you can provide to guide me would be amazing! Thanks in advance!

I'm in the same postition as u, just graduated but I have some ideas to what oyu are talking about.

per diem rate- u make more per hour than if you would as a salary but may not get benefits. but with per diem u get to choose your own hours.

I heard the most money is going with an agency to do home care but my school warned us against it due to limited mentorship available to you as a new grad. therefore, although the $$$ will be less, I hope to work in an environemtn with other OT's specifically a head OT or supervisor such as in a school or a clinic.

rates will depend on your area, like I think NY pays more per hour than NJ. I honestly don't expect to be making a fortune the first couple of years, I feel like I first have to build up experience and a good resume, get some specialty certifications in before being able to charge more than the going rate.

I wonder what they pay in a pediatric rehabilitation center, if hospitals pay more since the environment is more fast paced? I would LOVE to work in such an environment but I think it requires long hours which I can't do.

I think also once you get more experience, you can contract out to do evaluations which may bring more money in.

good luck!
