when we moved into our first apartment, the place was so filthy that even after my husband spent the saturday night before we got married cleaning it, I still found pieces of cheese in the cabinets, and I really thought that the grout on the tiles in my kitchen was supposed to be black! I was going to have my cleaning lady come the day after we moved to clean it, but the lndlord came in the day we moved and started doing work, so I never had a chance....

If your lease says that the people before you have to clean the apartment, then it is terrible that it is filthy. If your lease says nothing of the sort, then you are up the creek without a paddle, meaning you have nothing to go on, you will just have to clean it yourself.
Go read your lease and go from there.

We moved recently and our new place was also kind of gross when we moved in--there was still stuff in the cabinets and closets. I called the property manager (landlord lives out of the country) who told me to call the previous tenant. I said absolutely not. My lease is with you, you figure out how to get them to clean. All I know is I am entitled to move into a clean place. She sent them over after that, but it still wasn't great.
On the other hand, I spent the money on a cleaning lady for my old place. Yes I think that is the normal thing to do.

My apartment was clean when we left it, because we had still been living there and kept it clean.
Once all the furniture and boxes were out, I made sure to go over the place to make sure there was absolutely nothing left over. I swept every room thoroughly after the movers left.
I did not wash the floors again. I didn't feel that I had to. I left it clean and clear.
I expected to have to wash my new apartment down when I arrived, and I did. It was pretty dirty, but at least it was clear. _________________ Really Awesome Mom!

| Different people have different standards of clean. What is clean for one can be filthy for others. I've heard of some families brining in extra cleaning help to clean out the new apt before moving in.

| Also if painting or any repairs are being done after the previous people move out, that in itself can leave dirt.

I always hire cleaning help before moving in to an apartment.
Even if it's new, it's all dusty from the construction.

| No matter how clean you are, when furniture is moved you can never know what's back there.

I have learned to have 2 cleaning crews on moving days and to overlap by a few days.
I always bring a cleaning lady into a new apt to do all the hard to reach places (door frames, moldings, etc) before the furniture comes in.
The movers bring over and then the other cleaning crew does the old apt. In both of my last apartments, the owner was doing construction and only wanted the place empty, not necc to leave sparkling. _________________ I'm a post-modern liberal yekke quasi-Chardal Lubavitch baal teshuva trapped inside the body of pale fat Jewish lady with no neck.

| Its definitley rude for people to leave it looking disgusting, however, I think most people expect to have to do some if not a lot of cleaning when moving into a new place. It also depends if its part of a building or just someone renting out their basement. When we moved into a basement, we had to clean and we did not leave it so clean for the next people. I was pregnant when we moved, did not have the energy to clean it and I felt that I had no responsibility to clean it out when it wasn't left clean for us. When we moved into an apt complex, they got a cleaing crew and left us a sparkling apt to move into. It really depends on the situation but no, I do not think that the people moving out have a responsibility to clean for the new people unless it says so on the lease or something.
