I'm interested in general opinions on this....
I was in a crowded pizza store the other day, and my daughter had to use the bathroom. The door was locked and we waited, and waited, and waited. It was at least 7 or 8 minutes that we were waiting (not easily) (and I don't know how long the person was in the bathroom before we came), and finally the door opened and a mother came out with a baby (5 months or so), with a sort of smile and a shrug, saying sorry..... Clearly she had been nursing...
Now let me preface this with the fact that I nursed my kids till they were 18-22 months, I truly understand the issues involved! But to dominate the only bathroom in a crowded pizza store filled with kids? I was really annoyed! My 4 year old needed the bathroom, and there was a small line behind us...
Opinions?

| Just like you needed the bathroom for your child, (which possibly could have taken the same amount of time..) she needed it for hers. Her child needed to be fed. I dont think there was anything wrong with her putting her child first just as you would yours.

I think it's rude and disgusting and selfish, specially on a busy sunday. If baby is hungry and only nurses then find a private spot somewhere. It is really really not nice. I have been there and always managed to find a spot somewhere to give hungry baby his meal. _________________ Sunday social program forming in Brooklyn for children with social delays. I think if she was aware that people (specifically kids) were waiting to use the bathroom, it was rude. I've been in tough spots nursing wise and never felt comfortable to nurse in public, but to know there's a young child who NEEDS the bathroom NOW and to finish nursing... it's not fair to make them wait.
If you were too polite to knock down the door, that's another story .

bathroom emergencies are no joke with a 4-year-old.

yeah, thats the thing, I have to say I feel conflicted about this because I know what it is, having nursed for an accumulated total of about 5 years at this point. I've nursed in dressing rooms, in the car, in closets, in stairwells, and in bathroom stalls, when there were various stalls available.
And yet, no.... I cant get my head around it, and maybe you needed be there. Crowded store, children, families, my 4 year old hopping up and down on 1 foot, and people standing behind me, waiting. Its just not an ok plan. I can see trying it under different circumstances. Empty place, 2 restrooms, off hours. But as it was, I would not have considered that restroom an option, I would have left the store, in search of a place to nurse, ie, a clothing store with a changing room, my car, I dont know....

The only people that ever suggested I go nurse in the bathroom were frum people. Why in the world should a mother nurse her baby in that unsanitary place? It's disgusting. I think a person can nurse very discreetly in public and if it makes some of you women uncomfortable, that's your problem. I would never go sit in the bathroom nursing, uchhhh! _________________ Let your fellow's honor be as dear to you as your own and do not anger easily (Pirkei Avos/t)

I totally agree with this.
I am feeling bad for the woman who felt she had to nurse in the bathroom to begin with.

From my own experiences, I know that when I have a screaming starving baby, I get flustered and have only one thing on my mind - FEED THE BABY!!! Now, logical or not logical, my mind is focused on that one thing. So if the bathroom is the only private place in the whole restaurant, SPECIFICALLY b/c it's so busy on a Sunday during peak hours, that's probably where I would run to. I would never mean to be selfish or insensitive to the needs of others, but b/c I can not think straight and am so flustered at the time, I am not taking all the aspects into consideration.
In retrospect, I might think to myself "Hey! There is only one bathroom in the whole place full of kids - wow, I wonder if someone needed the bathroom while was nursing...whoops. I feel really bad."
I can only imagine that the woman who was nursing probably did not think to take things into consideration and I can only hope that she was able to take a lesson for the future. _________________ For every minute of anger, you lose sixty seconds of happiness.

would you eat your pizza in the bathroom? why would you feed your baby there? get a discreet nursing cover!
Asfar as frum people suggesting the bathroom nursing, I have even heard such a crazy excuse that some frum women give formula bottles to their infants because "it's not tznius to nurse in public"...
people today have no clue anymore what tznius really means

I was once in Misrad Hapnim with my baby and of course it was taking much longer than expected & she wasn't taking the bottle I brought for emergencies & there was nowhere to SIT let alone a private place to nurse so I ran to the bathroom & thought - of course they have only one bathroom for all these people. Since everyone was looking at me like it was my fault they couldn't hear over my babies screeching because I wasn't stopping it I figured - hey they won't mind if I use the bathroom to nurse her if now she's not screaming huh?
Well 10 minutes later the man in the bathroom came out so I figured - if he gets 10 minutes I get 10 minutes. Even though DD was nursing for at least 20 minutes a side at the time I fed her for 10 minutes, pulled her off (so now she's crying again) & went outside. Of course the people waiting outside the bathroom glared at me so I shrugged and looked apologetic because I realized - you really can't please anyone...
The next time I went to Misrad Hapnim I found an empty room that I think the employees use as a kitchen. So I've used that for the last few times I've been there.

| I cannot nurse in public, no matter how "covered" I may be. If it is obvious to others that I am nursing, then I feel it isn't appropriate. So I would have nursed in the bathroom too, though I would be as quick as possible.

It's not obvious at all. I find when you use one of those big cloths then it becomes obvious. It can look just like you're holding your baby, no one would even notice especially in a busy pizza place on a Sunday, it's way too noisy.
