| |
My almost five-year-old has suddenly started wetting a few times a day. It looks like she's going to the bathroom at the last minute and then it comes out before she gets her underwear off. Has she suddenly become less aware of the urges, so she only feels it when it's too late?
She's not going more often than usual, and no major changes in her life, so I can't understand what would cause this. IIRC, we had this a while ago - could it be seasonally related?
Could it be because we've been talking about toilet training her younger sister? Any ideas? _________________ hadasa. One 'h', one 's'.

Something is going on. It's very minor, but the younger is getting attention from toilet training, while she's not. Not saying that's what her problem is, but something is going on.

But we haven't started training the younger one yet - just mentioned that we're going to.
Also, she does try to go to the bathroom, she just gets there too late.
She is a bit of a sandwich - a quiet, sweet, aidele girl with a bossy leader type just before her and an adorable toddler right after.
I do make an effort to give her individual love and attention. What else can I do?

| I just know that I had a problem with one of my children at that age and when I mentioned it to my dr, she told me to just have him checked by a urologist. Maybe that's too extreme for you, but just putting it out there. What was wrong with him, is not the issue. Or rather, I don't feel comfortable saying it here.

The actual sight of the bathroom is what triggers the leaking. The body knows that it will get to the release soon, so it is almost like a automatic Pavlovian reaction to seeing the bathroom. It is very common in children and it is not necessarily related to any changes at home, etc.
The best solution, I have found, is to train the child to distract herself when she is approaching the bathroom and toilet. So you can train her to imagine that she is still the living room, she is still reading a book, she is still chatting with her friend, and to pretend that she is not yet in the bathroom. This can fool the body into delaying the leaking reaction. Another way kids do this is by sitting down and rocking back and forth and gradually the urge dissipates as they distract themselves by thinking about something else.
Let me know if you need something more concrete and imagining is too abstract, I will try to think of something.

Just make sure she doesn't have a UTI. It is a common reason for wetting. _________________ Live the life you want to live. Be the person you want to remember. Make decisions. Make mistakes. If you failed, at least you tried.

| Thank you, everyone for your input. Whatever it was, it lasted just a few days. She's been dry again for the past three days. I hope it'll stay that way!
