| |
We are b"h invited to my in laws for shavuos and I really don't want to come empty handed but there are two problems:
1. I am a little overwhelmed right now and have very little time/energy to prepare anything
2. I don't have a milichig oven right now so no baking
Would it be weird to bring a bought cheese cake or some fruit? (I think it would be a little strange)
Maybe someone has an easy no bake milichig desert I can make? one that doesn't take a lot of time and doesn't make to much of a mess but travels well? - they are about an hour car ride away
They eat a parve meal at night with a milichig desert and a milichig kidush in the morning so a none desert type dish would not work.
She already made cheese blintzes so that wouldn't work either.
TIA

This is my favorite cheese cake recipe - no bake:
Crush tea biscuits (or any other plain flavor cookie)
Pour half of crushed cookies on bottom of pan.
Mix one osem vanilla pudding mix with 2 cups milk. Add in a container cream cheese and blend/mix/shake in container until not lumpy. Pour over cookie crumbs. Cover cheese mixture with another layer of cookie crumbs.
Prepare 1 package strawberry jello according to package directions (usually by dissolving in 2 cups hot water). Let set partially, until thick but not solid. Pour over second layer of cookie crumbs gently and carefully so the cookie crumbs don't come up into the jello (this is why it has to be partially set.
Refrigerate. Eat and enjoy.

Traditionally we decorate the house with flowers and greens for Shavuot to remember Har Sinai. Why can't you bring a bouquet, a plant etc? Totally appropriate any time, all the more so for Shavuot. _________________ The future simply isn't what it used to be....

Thanks for the recipe de_goldy, but I never manage with no bake cheese cake whenever I make it, it reminds me of (and comes out looking like) those things we made from biscuits and white cheese in first grade.
Flowers are a good idea Tamiri, Thanks! I'll see what dh thinks.

They do the kiddush at home? Maybe put together a cheese and cracker platter. That's simple enough. Or bring something else as a gift like a little serving dish. _________________ I'm not the popular Mama Bear. I'm "the other one."

Pudding pie - make pudding from mix - preferably not instant and pour into graham cracker crust.Top with whip cream.
or a salad. I personally think it's fine to buy something - I've done that before.

I wouldn't bring flowers, it's Shavuos, everybody buys that themselves already. In case you are set on bringing it anyway then bring a vase too, I always run out of vases when guests bring me flowers on Shavuos since I've used up all of mine already.
I would bring a nice fruit platter, they're expensive but they look nice and everyone always loves having it all prepared so they don't have to deal with making a mess and the patchke. _________________ Let your fellow's honor be as dear to you as your own and do not anger easily (Pirkei Avos/t)

If you want to do something really showstopper that is no bake, last year I think it was either Mishpacha or Binah had these cheese mousse cups that were stunning. I can find you the recipe if you wish, I have it lying around somewhere. It takes time but it's not difficult.
Basically you buy disposeable parfait cups...you make a cheese mixture, and to one of them you add melted milk chocolate, so you have the dark and the light. Then you use bought Baker's choice nut crunch, and you also need graham cracker crumbs. You layer these in the parfait cups. Graham crumbs, dark mixture, nut crunch, graham crumbs, light mixture, nut crunch on top. They are stunning and taste HEAVENLY. _________________ Chayalle

Just reread OP's post...sorry forgot no time/energy. I really don't think there's anything wrong with bringing a nice, bought cheesecake. I wouldn't mind some myself, if company brought some. But then again, I don't know your MIL.
Ditto to merrymom's idea of a fruit platter....those are always refreshing, and great for the long afternoons.

You can totaly buy some dairy delight like miniatures. Nothing wrong with that. Main thing is that you are bringing something. _________________ Sunday social program forming in Brooklyn for children with social delays. Pm me for more info

If you know your MIL usually makes her own cheesecake, then I wouldn't bring a store bought one. If you know she doesn't make it, then that would be a good idea. _________________ Want to lose weight fast? Want to keep it off easily?

No, why would you think that?
For that matter, you can bring anything you like; it doesn't have to be something to be served at the YT meals. It's fine to bring s/t for your ils to enjoy any other time.
It's a mistake to assume you must bring s/t to contribute to the meal at which you're eating, unless you've been asked to do that. AAMOF, many balebostes dislike it when ppl bring things that must be consumed now, b/c they've already planned and prepped their menu, and may not need or want yet another perishable dessert when they already made two or three.
I like it when ppl bring fresh unprocessed fruit b/c my local stores don't have such nice stuff. People usually bring gorgeous fruit and I'm pleased to use it for fruit salad or dessert.
Your hostess gift can be anything at all, and need not necessarily be food or even wine. But why sepculate? why not ask mil if you can contribute fruit or a cheesecake or wine? Or challahs? Though for an hour-long car trip in hot weather, I'd go for something consumable but very nonperishable--either wine or an assortment of deliciously fragrant soaps, sachets and the like.

I only make cheesecake from biscuits and white cheese in first grade (with vanilla or choc pudding thrown in). I call it cheesecake for idiots (specifically like me!). It always tastes great and my kids and I really like it!

| Someone mentioned different cheeses and crackers above. I would love to get that as a gift. It's something people might not think of buying themselves but its really fun.

My mother appreciates people bringing things for the actual meal, but really appreciates being told in advance so that she doesn't get doubles. A few times it has happened that DILs would bring the same things that she already prepared.
