Does anyone have instructions or a pattern for closing a rear vent on a full-length light weight denim skirt? What is the best material to use? How do I make sure that I can still walk in the skirt?

You can shorten the skirt. You can put a kick pleat in. You can use a zipper.

su7kids already gave directions on how to put in a kick pleat or closing it up. A zipper is no good, unless you can walk very comfortable with it closed because the zipper will break otherwise and if you can't then you're not closing it up. You can only close it up if you can walk. Maybe baste it first and see if you can walk. As for what type of fabric if you make it into a kick pleat, if you can find the closest match to the color in the same weight like a cotton, even if it's not denim, that would be the best, but if not, sometimes you can use a quiet cotton print unless of course you like things a little louder. Bring your skirt to a fabric store for the best match.

Thanks!
It took me a few minutes to figure out what These Wing Divas were. LOL
I can't really tell what I'm looking at with the inverted kick pleat instructions until you get to the end. Confused
I don't think they added any fabric though -- they had a fuller skirt, right?

I might try the first (E-How) suggestion. I will have to read it a few more times, but it's pretty much what I had in my head (without the technical procedure, of course). One thing though, I don't think my skirt has a very large seam allowance. Will that make it harder to attach, or, even, bumpy? Also, right now, the slit is tearing at the top because the fabric is worn through. Is there a way to cover it (nicely) from the outside (instead of/in addition to) adding the piece on the underside?

If it has at least 1/4" seam allowance, that's okay, but I would reinforce the stitching. I don't see how it would make it bumpy especially since you said it's a light weight fabric, but make sure you iron it well. Why is the fabric worn through? Is it not a new skirt? If it's been worn already and that's why the fabric is worn through, it might happen again unless you reinforce really well with fabric over or underneath. If you do it on the outside, you make a any shape with whatever fabric and really sew it well and I would also reinforce it underneath with maybe iron-on interfacing or something like that. You could also reinforce with an applique on the outside. G'luck!!

Yoma, if I make a shape on the outside and sew it, how do I keep it from looking ugly?

You sew it with matching thread to the skirt, not to the kick pleat color/s. even around a slit, there is stitching, you can sew directly ON TOP of that stitching in the same color, and it works out really well.

Like with the stitch that goes around... I get it. I was thinking the edges would be sticking up, but I think I get it. Thanks.
