My OBGYN gave birth and then delivered a baby that same day.

Wow! Schools are just about the germiest places. I wouldn't have my newborn spend her entire day there every day, and certainly not to bring her at a few hours old!

As someone who did go back to work (from home) a few days after giving birth I still think this doesn't make sense.

After giving birth she should be spending a lot of her time lying down in order not to risk hemorrhaging. Also, it sets a bad precedent for her employees who may not feel well enough to go back to work straight after giving birth.

Reading between the lines, I'd guess that she wants to make sure parents (and board of governors members!) know that they're getting their money's worth for $14,500 per term (not sure if this means a full academic year or a semester in Britain). Probably a high-pressure job, and this happened to be an easy way for her to demonstrate toughness.

However, as someone who regularly was doing work within a few days after childbirth, this seems like a bad idea for all the reasons mentioned by other posters plus some we haven't thought of yet!

Well if she is being discharged from the hospital only a few hours after giving birth... what kind of message is the medical field sending to patients?

While I was in UK I read about a woman who gave birth on Dec 25th & an hour later she was home serving a Holiday dinner to her family.

Now THAT is nuts! Shocked Shocked

Was this in the US (I didn't watch the clip)? In the UK they send you home after 6 hours if everything is OK (define OK). That's socialized medicine for you. Something to look forward to, I guess.

These women probably don't really have a choice, and they are so much stronger than us. Only the strongest survive to adulthood.

I think new mothers should be respected by others and themselves enough to devote some exclusive time to the care of mother and baby. Halacha says in the first 3 days a new mother is a sick person in danger of dying, in the first 7 days she is sick, in the first 30 days she isn't quite recovered, and is still postpartum for 24 months.

Thanks, Ruchel.
I'm not saying that many women have no choice but to return to work, outside or inside their homes. But I think that family and community should make extra efforts to help out if they can. Not every new mother is blessed with this help.
Going back to work 7 hours after birth sends a skewed and dangerous message to other women. Now we will compete to see who can go back to work the soonest without colapsing dead?

The Daily Mail is always printing something sensational.

And sometimes it isn't even true.
